Steve ,I hope this qualifies for 911. I have my truck in the drive way with the valve covers off, adjusting the valves and have gotten myself in a mess. That little timing pin I can't seem to get to work and now don't know TDC. I don't know where TDC is now and which valves to adjust. I know I'm the only one that has ever done this so please pamper me and tell me how do I find TDC. I don't want to start the little bugger till I'm sure it's OK. I looked in the manuel and it says to use the timing pin. I have gotten myself lost.

Thanks:

In the first place, the timing pin is for Injector pump timing, not for setting the valves. You don't need to be that precise for the valves, because there are several degrees of rotation where the valves do nothing. All you need to do when setting the valves is rotate the engine untill an assistant determines that both valves on the # 1 cyl are slack, along with the first or intake valve on #2. This is TDC close enough. Adjust these valves, then #3E, #4I, & #5E only. Then mark the flywheel, lay on your back, grab the balancer with both hands, and rotate 360 deg. and adjust the rest of the valves.

TDC

Turbo Thom, I find #1 TDC by turning engine and watching the rockers on #6. When they are switching from the exaust valve closing to the intake valve just starting to open, #1 is at TDC ready to fire (and to adjust valve clearance). Like Dennis, I mark the balancer and the timing cover with a paint pen. You are all set up for next time. These Questions are exactly what this site is for!! I love it! :) Chris

Turbo Thom,

I just got into the same situation with my timing pin. I sprayed it with a shot of liquid wrench and it is now lose enough to work. Scary when it doesn't move though!
