I just had my truck timmed by the local rip off joint.

I told them to set it to 15. 5. I asked the mechanic what he set it for and he said 13. Anyway, now it smokes blue at an idle.

any ideas why? It sounds like its set at about 20 deg. This morning I went out to start it and it was chilly(1 below zero) and I was expecting it to start better than it did but it cranked longer than ever before.

The mechanic used the pin method and some paper wrapped around the harmonic balancer. I know its not set right but, what if its way to far advanced, would this cause blue smoke at an idle and harder starting when its real cold?

Thanks boys

Sounds like the timming is to slow rather than fast. Mine did the same thing when I got my truck back from the dealer when they replaced the gear case (damn KDP:mad: ). I went home and timed it my self. It was 6 degrees here Wed. and it started fine. :D

Dbonzi;

I suggest you call Mike Adams at Mike's Custom Trucks 701. 587. 6335 and see what he can do for you.

He too drives a 96 manual and is very aare of the timing problems from the factory. He also has a KDP jig for insurance against the dreaded timing gear case rupture.

OK, 800 miles round trip is a bit of a drive, but Mike is not out to get your money without giving you customer satisfaction.

I don't know of any diesel specialty shop in the twin cities area. I live in the sticks and have 2 within a 50 mile radius, go figure.

Dennis,

Sounds like the guy set the lift in MM the wrong amount. For your engine you need 5. 45mm of lift from TDC to be at 15. 5 degrees of timing advance.

Many a guy has looked at the wrong chart to determine their lift amounts. Im betting it is wrongo!

Sorry to hear the troubles. If he set it at 13 he screwed up anyway. Its 13. 5 from Dodge already. You need more timing to help with heat and make more top end power and get better mileage.

Thanks for the replys,

I guess I'm just going to have to buy the tools to do it mysef.

At least I'll have a clue what it is set at when I am done.

The part I don't get is: Once it is running now it doesn't blow any white smoke and it will rev to 3500rpm with out any hesitation or stumbling like it did before it was timmed. The EGTS are definitely lower. At defueling before it was timmed it would climb to 1500 real fast. Now its takes a quite a bit more time before it starts to climb. And its faster on my little test strip by about 4 MPH.

Any clue?

Thanks again.

MAYBE BUY THE MILLER KIT AND TIME HER YOURSELF. THE MILLER KIT DOES NOT COME WITH THE PULLER. IT IS SEPERATE.

ITS NICE TO ABLE TO CHANGE IT WHEN NEEDED/WANTED.
