Drove the truck today!

The Turbo seems to be spooling up fine. There was not much load, camper was on but not towing. EGT was about 950 max with my foot in it.

Thanks for all the help. If I had to do it again I think I would pull the turbo, because I am a worrier. But I think it is all ok. When I do the exh brake next week I will look inside if I can to inspect the blades. Probably will not see anything though...

Has anyone gotten a fiber optic camera. I have had a number of times it would be good for inspecting things... I think this is another... Anyway I am gonig to look into it again... :D

Thanks again,

Ira

The exhaust side of the turbo is seperate from the pressure side. You wont be able to see if there is any debris in there. Sounds like your install was a success, congrats.

My solution to the drill chip problem

Tis is how I did it. I loosened all the bolts holding the turbo to the manufold. The little waffled piece you esee between them is a small piece cut from a rain gutter downspout. The chips fell out and nothing got into the turbo.

When I did mine I tried to loosen the turbo, but the bottom bolt closest to the firewall was a PITA as most of you already know. I used grease and a small magnet attached to the drill bit and tap to magnetize each. Afterward I fished everything out with a magnet. most of the pieces were on the bit and tap as I drilled with a slow rpm and feed press.

This is what a chip going through looks like.....

This was actually a broken bit when drilling. I even pulled the turbo after it broke. Vaccumed out the pipe ant turbo and a piece still got past me. Should have started the truck with the turbo off for a second and blew it out. As easy as it is to remove the turbo I wont be that lazy again.

Obvious would be an understatement............

Funny though, it took a couple of seconds before it screamed. I'm guessing that a piece went down the slope of the exhaust manifold and got wedged. Then... . Pop, screech, rumble rumble.

I din't even try to run it. I was lucky in that I had the HY off the 3500 as a spare and swapped em out. With that big of a chunk missing and the speed these things spin it would have exploded in no time.

I bought another used HY and had Piers modify it with a HX compressor wheel. I just have an EZ and 275's so this set up is perfect for no lag and get's me some extra air. Max 34 psi boost. I managed that out of a stock HY but the difference is the stock one turned all sort of colors from the heat. This one still looks new.

Quit worrying, yours is fine. If it did get a chip large enough to do some damage you'd be replacing it already.
