Old Tractor Questions!

1. You must learn to pronounce the city name. It is Hugh-stun, not Howstun.

2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Houston has its own version of traffic rules ... . Hold on and pray. There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Houston. They all drive like that.

3. All directions start with, "Go down to Loop 610"... . which has no beginning and no end.

4. The Chamber of Commerce calls getting through traffic a "Scenic Drive. "

5. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00. The evening rush hour is from 3:00 to 7:00. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.

6. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out and possibly shot. When you are the first one off the starting line, count to five when the light turns green before going, to avoid getting into any cross-traffic's way.

7. Kuykendahl Road can ONLY be pronounced by a native.

8. Construction on I-10, I-45, US 59 and Loop 610 is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment.

9. All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh we must be in Pasadena!!!. "

10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect.

11. All old ladies with blue hair in pink Cadillac's have total right-of-way.

12. The minimum acceptable speed on Loop 610 is 85. Anything less is considered downright sissy.

13. The wrought iron on windows in east Houston is NOT ornamental.

14. Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that says, "Keep honking, I'm reloading. " In fact, don't honk at anyone.

15. If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 in a 60 mph zone, people are not waving when they go by.

16. The Sam Houston Toll road is our daily version of NASCAR.

17. If it's 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend.

Been there - done that!

Just got back from LA. All above applies and then a few!

Speed limit says 65 mph, but anything from 75 to 105 mph is permissible when traffic is not at a standstill - then it's a lane swapping free for all!

THESE are the REALLY good ones that do apply.

However i think Westimer is used more then 610.

Kuykendahl is so that we can make fun of people NOT from Houston when they say it.

Within the greater Houston city limit, i45 has had construction over the past 45+ years, no joke.

"Oh we must be in Pasadena!!!. " enough said!

My fav bumber sticker is "Hook if you want to see Jesus!"

I think Curtis and I do a NASCAR run on the beltway whenever possible. :D

This is a good one me4

Andrew

Am there. Live that. Traffic is the pits, but you learn which routes to avoid at certain hours. Sometimes even that doesnt help. It seems the entire towns road system is under constant revamping.

At least the Beltway USED to be my Nascar. Now some politician in a suit(no offense Bill:)) decided that the speed limit should be 55. In the afteroons I can still run about 75, but at 3:30 in the morning the only people on the roads are me, the drunks and the cops looking for speeders.

Noe you guys might get a nasty little reply from GrandPappy on the Pasadena thing. :)

I haven't seen you running the BW yet Andrew. If I did, I must have been going too fast to see if it was you. ;)

I'm still learning what that little arm on the left side of my steering column is for. I always thought is was just a place to put the windshield wiper controls on. Turns out, it's a way to let other drivers know you intend on turning right or left. What will they think of next.

Now you know I've been in Louisiana for a few years.

whenever I have to go to Houston for meetings I always do my best to figure a way to bring someone with me from the office to "assist in designing" or some such excuse just so I can drive in the commuter lane and avoid some of the traffic... ..... y'all can keep Houston,,,,,,,,I like my little town with little traffic :p

Bastrop, Texas

It always amazes me to hear Austin folks talk about Houston traffic- I'll be running in the "183" race tomorrow evening. That person on my right? Why, she's my DOOR GUNNER, of course!

Curtis- you'll be pleased to know I traded those suits for some nicer shorts! :D

bill, If your coming all the way up 183 towards my neck of the woods, you'll really like what we've done to the track...

- Dirt strips on the shoulder have been widened to promote more passing

- Added some chicanes (sp?) to test the driver's road course abilities

- Eliminated single file re-starts

- Increased the pit road speed limit to 60 (80 if you stay on the grass)

- Below the yellow line is no longer out of bounds

- Stiffened the penalty for slowing under a yellow to allow others to get their lap (spot) back... Remember, when the yellow comes out "Race to the finish line!!"

We feel the above additions will increase the fan's enjoyment of the "event" while keeping average* speeds below 20, promoting a safer spectacle.

*note: Average speed calculated based on a minimum speed of 0 and a maximum sustained speed of 120. :D

ps: In Houston was the first (and only time) I've ever been to a convenience store that your not allowed in. You just walk to the window, point at what you want, and he hands it to you under the bulletproof glass... . (this was my first hint I might want to go ahead and drive on thru to Austin).

The same night, I stopped next to a cop who was parked in a parking lot and asked him if he knew of nice hotel nearby... . he said sure, get on Ih10 and head west and look for the "Ramada-San Antonio West" billboards and then just follow the directions... (that's a true story!)

Just curious, would the street in #7 be pronounced like kike & doll? That IS quite a spelling. It must point out the out a towners real quick. :D

Alright, Eric, now you've done it! You've let the world in on the secret Houston password. This isn't gonna be pleasant when we see you next time at the LSTDR meeting! ;) :D

By the way, you forgot to mention that we're gonna give you furriners directions like, "Take the (North, Eastex, Northwest, Katy, Southwest, South, Gulf, Pasadena, Baytown, etc. ) Freeway. " Just one problem - there's not one road sign in Harris County that has any of these names on them! :-laf :-laf

Hey, Dwayne! I like how y'all have reconfigured the track- reminds me of the Southwest Freeway @ Sugarland! Nuthin' a little boost can't get ya out of!

OK, since Sealy gave away the answer to the first test, let's try this- pronounce "San Felipe", "Fuqua", and the town names "Manor" & "Elgin" correctly. First one to get all four correct gets to try "Carancahua"!

Here are a couple of names I picked up while I was there..... Sam's Boat... . Ricks... . Houstons Mens Club..... and a few others I can't remember... whats that strip club on 59 next to the Hilton.

That would be the Colorado Bar and Grill or possibly Michaels International... ... ... . not that I have any personal knowledge of these places... ... ... I just drive by that way sometimes... ... ... well at most twice a week. :D

I love the names in Austin, grew up there (in South Austin near Manchaca) and love to hear people from out of town pronounce Manchaca Rd. (currect is Manshack), one of my favorites is Bexar which is the county San Antonio is in (pronounced Bear)... . but I love to hear people pronounce Elgin, or Buda... . I'll let y'all fight it out on pronouncing those...

And ok, I give in, traffic on 71 in Bastrop does suck now, but thats because Bastrop is the last place in Central Texas that hasn't been developed,,,,now its begun,,,,but for now its still better than Houston,,(nothing personal guys :p )... . y'all stop moving here, give us a break... . :D

Oh and if you ever want to confuse someone on directions in Austin, just send them down Northland Dr. , Uh I mean 2222, uh I mean Koenig (another good pronunciation word), uh I mean... I think it goes on a little longer...
