I'm wanting to put a bigger tire and wheel on my truck. Stock was a 245. Now I have 265's and you know there's a problem when your wife tells they need to be bigger. (THE TIRES!!) The local Dodge dealer said if I go any bigger than 2 sizes above stock my trans would not lock-up properly. I'm going to go to 285/75's or 305/70's w/ 8" wheels at least and hope my power and milage is not effected to bad. Will the stock trans make it? Hope so!!

I've been running 35" tires for 3 years now. Trans is fine, locks up with no problems, handles good, no frontend problems. milage was @ 18mpg around town till I put injectors in. now milage is @ 14mpg :( ,but I have lots more power.

am running 305/70/16's without any loss in power or mileage. As a matter of fact it rides smoother and handles better. I run Goodyear AT/S

8" wheels is one of the biggest appearance-enhancing things you can do to these trucks. I put on my stock 245s on stock 6 1/2 rims last night (racing on Sunday), man my truck looks like hell now. You may also want to look at 255/85R16s, they are the same height as a 285/75. I like mine.

Whatever tires you buy be sure to get a high enough rating for weight. I had 285/75/16's B. F. Goodrichs on my truck and it had too much side sway. They were "c" rated tires. The stock ones are "E" rated and that's what I have on again. No, it doesn't look as good, but I'm not off in the ditch either. I'll try other larger ones when I'm spent out on bombing maybe, but they need to have the ratings or forget it. My truck pulled to the left whenever I stopped with the big tires and was fixed when they went! My two cents worth, let us know what worked... ... ...

I've had 35"BFG A-T on my truck for 4 yrs they work great

I often have over 2000lbs in bed & pull a trailer apprx 7000lbs

& have no swaying problems. These tires are on rims with

5" backspacing.

Hello Sewman,

What is the rating for your BFG's? Also, how much pressure do you run in them? I was using stock rims and that could of been my tombstone. The tire store said that wasn't a problem, but the stockers are only about 6 inches wide I guess.

35" may be too big

I've been running 35" tires on 8" wheels for about 3 years. They work okay but if I had it to do again, I'd go with 33". The 35's rub sometimes. They look great and work great otherwise. I agree with others, you need to find ones that have an e rating or you may not get the handling/performance you want.

Herb,

The tires I have areBFG A-T35x12. 5x 16. 6 on 9. 75" rim w/5" backspacing

standard is 4 1/2 pushing the tire out causes rubbing & more mud & dirt on the side of thr truck.

These tires are "D" rated for 3385lbs @ 50 lbs press.

I run 30 in the back & 32 in the front when empty

if I'm hauling heavy I run 45 in the back w/no swaying

these wider tires will wear fast in the center if you run too much press. these tires ride nice also, this truck rides better than my wifes 00 GC Jeep

I really like the 255/85R16s. They stay tucked in the wheel wells and don't dirty the truck up and down the sides. I have had two sets of Dunlops and they seem to wear a little fast. I had one set of Wild Country tires and they wore much better. The WCs were a full 33" tall and seemed to wear better and looked great.

For what its worth, until I started going to a dealer with the newer Hunter balancing system I could never get light truck tires to run smooth, even the smaller 31" tires on my Toyota.

I just installed a set similar to your's. They are Remington 33-12. 50x16. 5 on 9. 75" Eagle rims. They look great and ride great, but do stick out about an inch beyond the fenders. Look nice but do throw more crap up on the sides. The diameter is maybe 1/2" more than my 265-75x16", but the rolling resistance seems to be greater - noticeably more. But they LOOK great and I guess that is the most important thing! I was thinking of going with 35s. but not sure if I want to gear up that much.
