On a dually, would you recommend or are you required to use tire chains on the two outside rear tires or all four? This is for both running empty and towing.

~Many Thanks

I carry them . . BUT in the last 15 years have not had to use them... only outsides need chained

I run Michelin XPS traction and live on a steep twisty off camber hill. . with the LS rear end and the tires AND FRONT END WEIGHT have never had an issue yet. . but think I just jinxed myself LOL

If you are towing you might want them on the rear tires otherwise I always chain the fronts first on my 4x4.

Up front you got the weight steering and brakes only a trailer would change that and I avoid getting into that situation at all cost! If I found that happening I would chain all four wheels and the trailer too. My hunting buddy does that every fall to get him and his horses out of the Bitteroots.

As for the "Cali Chips" usually just carrying the chains is enough if not put them on the front.

Just a quick note re: chaining brakes only... It can get very tricky when braking, the light rear end has a tendancy to swing around to try and catch up with the weighted, chained front end.

Seems if you are having trouble with the truck swinging around from Chaining the fronts you are moving to fast. The max speed for almost all chains is 35 MPH and if I am on the snow and ice I never go over 45... the reason is I flipped and rolled three times at 50 in the snow ... . so you can can see I'm a bit gunshy... ... ... .

When I chain up I am usually in the low range of 4x4 because I ain't movin' without em

I have never felt the back coming around climbing up or down steep rural driveways I've even been out on the ski hill when ity's good and firm... :-laf :-laf :-laf
