Tire Chains

Any one ever use tire chains? What brand? Where did you get them? Currently I have 315/70/17s on my truck.

On road or off road use? V bars or no V bars? Years ago I bought a few different brands, don't remember the brands. What I do remember is, none of them held up. I ended up buying all the hardware from a local farm and fleet store to make my own chains. It was cheaper and they lasted a lot longer.

V bars are for off road use. They dig in too much to use on road, cause road damage. There are a few different style tightening mechanisms for chains also. I do not like the single end clasp style. I prefer the cam type. If I was good at posting links, I would. Just google can style tire chains. Also, check to see if using chains in your area is legal.

I have a set of their Boron Alloy for our plow truck. They have just about every combination of designs available if you would like to look at the different versions.

I have used a bunch over the yrs, have to make sure there legal for street use in your area, as not all places allow them
and then there is speed issue's
most don't allow for very fast traveling

studded tires might be a better option for winter traveling, or pure snow tires

live in a snowy area and to be honest never needed them for on road use , they tend to plow and slat way too often here!
off road and ona LOT of ice, there a big plus
but typically I can get any where on road without them in 4x4, and I have been in a LOT of blizzards over the yrs, where they closed hi ways and such and still never had any issue's

I just always have and make sure I have good tires in winter on the trucks

i cant remember the brand i have but they are heavy duty truck ones with a cam tightening tool . They are nice. Once you check em and retighten there make no noise. I got them from Carquest

What are you running for a lift? If nothing I am not sure you can run them up front and if your on OEM wheels I am not sure you can run them in the back either if you have wheel well liners.


I have the heavy lug style for my trucks. 2 pairs with V bar and one pair without. The without are my "pavement" set and I haven't ever used them. I have had all 4 pairs on my truck on 255/80R17's on OEM wheels with a 1" spacer. Clearance is very tight up front as the chains make my 33x10.5" tire closer to a 35x12.5" tire. The rear wheel well liners have scuff marks from the chains so a wider tire may have a decent contact issue.

They are the brand Les Schwab carries/sells. I could look later as I don't have the truck with me.

I have used cam lock and non cam-lock chains and IMHO cam-locks are gimick and I still use 2 rubber tensioners per tire.

Umm. I have no lift as far as I know. I had the truck sense 06 it was new in 04. It has 315/70/17s on it now.

I am not sure that chains will work with those tires and no lift. Also a level kit would decrease room. You would need a lift that pushes the axle back forward or smaller tires.

Chains will fit with 285/70R17 but only barely.
