RE: Goodyear 235/80/17

My 04 4X4 dually now has about 65K on the clock and iwas at the lube center Friday for another service..... the guy came in and pointed out that both front tires (goodyears gsa's) have cracks in the sidewall that were about 2" long... some on the inside and some on the outside... . I pulled a knife from my pocket and pushed apart one of the cracks and could see cord material, a bad sign.....

All the cracks ran in parallel with the edge of the rim... . within 1 1/2 inches of the rim.....

I'd just changed the 4 rear tires as being worn out... . and didn't notice this problem on the 4 rear tires.....

A trip to my local goodyear store confirmed that I had a warranty problem..... and they would adjust them based on tread left on the tires..... I'm guessing at this point I'm lucky to get 30% on each... . but who knows at this time... .

Their computer found 2 blackwalls..... in the same tread... . I wanted the tread that was closer to a highway tread... no such luck..... One tire was in Seattle... . the second tire was in Portland... he ordered them both up and would have them next tuesday... ...

On the way back to the shop I called the guy I'd gotten the 4 rear tires from..... Coopers... hoping that he'd have gotten in some front tires... . highways that I'd ordered a month ago... . no such luck.....

I looked for tires for 4 weeks... . and finally ordered the coopers for the rear... and at the time of install had them order 2 more for the front.....

So check your tires for problems and get some on order 3 to 5 weeks before you think your going to need them..... There just not around... .

Same problem here on my 2WD truck. All four rears are fine but the fronts have tears all the way around the tire. Two inches out from the rim on the inside and outside. I will post a picture in the am.

Do you think that the side loading of the front tires as it goes around a corner is the problem... my truck pulls a trailer that weighs close to 20K... . and I do that about 80% of the time... . So from a load standpoint I know the rear tires got abused... .

This problem can be trace to as far back as 15 years. Goodyear never lied : Their good for a year.

I think it is an underinflation deal. I will take them to the local goodyear guy and ask. He can keep the replacements, I wont ever run a goodyear again.....

Hey Bill.....

That's what they look like for sure... ... but I can say... that we took delivery on this truck in Nov and raised the tire pressure to 75 psi... ... and their checked every week... ... so I don't believe that low pressure is a problem..... but feel its just a tire that can't handle the side wall flex... .

Jim,

I religiously carry 80 PSI in my tires when hauling our Lance camper which is what this truck does 99% of the time. At a little over 11,000 miles and approximately 14 months, I have a front tire showing a very small short small hairline crack forming on the sidewall. This tire was on the rear before I rotated them at 10,000 miles. I'll keep a close watch on them and head to the local Goodyear dealer when(not if) they get worse.

I notice the cracks at 2500 miles on my 03. I stopped by a Goodyear place and they must know that they have an issue, they replaced them free of charge on the spot. I am sure that because they had so few miles on them they didn't prorate, which they might for higher miles tires. But they did stand behind their tires which was a pretty stand up thing for a big company today.

The only problem I have with Michelins is that I constantly find rocks in the bed of my truck from being slung. I'm going to install mud flaps to prevent this.

side wall failure

all 6 tires on wifes 03 3500 qc had crackes in side walls. last week lft frt tire

blew out 7/32 tread lft, call good years dealers 5 of then got the run around.

in spected other 5 tires found swelling within 1. 5 inches of bead where side

wall failed. (rapid air lose) firestone was forced to recall steeltex at on ford

excurtions load range d. for rapid ai lose side walls would blow at hwy speed.

cked with national traffic safty board found goodyear was under investigation

for same thing, was closed in 02 year before this problem was showing up. I will

be filing complaint with ntsb. willbe replacing tires with generals. tire adjustment

to replaced will same thing is not safe. they use list price for adustment. why do

these tire list for so much? your paying for for cost to produce the tires good

year is out $00 your out $400-800. for 6.

these tires need recalled goodyear sra.

frtendtech, stay away from the Generals. I'm at about 3/32 with only 32K on them. I'm kinda what you might call, "extreme use", but this is the worst I've seen. Mastercraft actually makes a pretty good tire. Not sure if their new MSR is as good as the Courser AT but it's all they've got in 235/80/17. Cooper Discovery HT is comparable in design to the Mastercraft MSR but I don't know how much they cost. MSR is $215 locally.

Another option I was looking at was using 245 75(70) x 17s on the DRW. I posted a query and folks have put them on with out needing spacers and still have enough room between the DRWs. This size is substantially less expensive than the Coopers, Mastercrafts, or Goodyears.

I ended up finding some 235 80 17 Cooper Discover STs and wheels with 2K on them for $1K in the classifieds. Really like the Coopers. We have a couple of company trucks with the Mastercrafts, which are also make by Cooper, and they are a good tire also.
