I have an ‘04. 5 with the . 373 gearing, auto, and a 2” Rev Tek leveling kit. I was planning to upsize to the BFG AT 285s, but now I am thinking about maybe going to the 315s. I tow a 6500LB gooseneck trailer that runs around 8000LBs when loaded. I also do a lot of offroading during hunting season in very rocky conditions. I have had very good luck with the BFGs in the past on my Toyota Tacoma and T100 trucks, and had bad luck with a set of the OEM Toyos that came on the T100. 2 flats in one day- the second was 26 miles from the nearest tar road and 82 miles from the nearest tire place. So I am a little leary of the Toyo M/Ts, unless they are really a superior tire to the BFG A/Ts.

The help/advice I would like is this: (1) Opinions as to which would be a better choice- the 285s or 315s. (2) If I went to the 315s, how much would that impact my gear ratio when towing? (I love the amount of power the truck has right now) (3) How many MPG will I go down for each size? (4) I’ve seen several posts about the death wobble. How much will that come into play with each size? (5) Anything I should worry about going from an E-rating down to a D-rating? (6) Which brand of tire would do the best job in my circumstance?

I really appreciate everyone’s advice- it is so nice to have such a good resouce for these kind of questions!

I have had both!

If you are keeping the stock rims go with the the 285's. I had the 315's witht he stock rims and replaced them with 53,000 miles only because the centers were worn pretty bad. I now have the centerline crossfires 8. 5" wide and the 285' are way better handling.

Just my . 02

I have had BFG's and Pro Comps. I now prefer Pro Comp. I am now running Pro Comp 305 Extreme AT's on my 06 Mega Cab. I only have about 4,000 miles on them. I really like them, they are worth a look.
