I got a lead on a Coats 2020 tire machine for my Garage. This is the older style that you sit the rim on top of the machine over a shaft and tighten down a nut on this shaft to hold the tire. then the tire is unbeaded by a shoe that comes up from the bottom and one you place on top of the tire. This is the machine that was known for breaking the centers out of the Cragar Mags

Will the Modern Alunimum rims on our trucks be safe to use on this type older machine? I have used this style for 14 years (until I switched work fields) and never did break a rim, but I never put Cragars on them either.

Yes you can do aluminum wheels w/ a 2020... but I wouldn't recommend it. It's just too easy to damage an aluminum wheel with one of these machines. How much are you paying for it? If you're getting for next to nothing and you know how to use it without breaking something, then go for it. If you are giving several hundred, shop around, bet you can find a used euro style machine. I guess the bigger question is, what is savings of doing your own tire work compared to replacing a wheel if you damage or break one?

Jay

P. S. I own a tire store.

Thanks Jay. The price of the machine is about the same price I will pay to install my snow tires this winter then take them back off next spring! If you add the time spent waiting at the tire store it pays for itself in one visit.

Yes I have experience with them, I have probably changed a kazillion tires in my lifetime on one. It should fit nice in my 28'x28' 2-floor garage (2 floors meaning cars on both top and bottom floor!)

Thanks for the heads up.
