Trailer wireing question

Fifth wheel backing

I have 55,000 miles on the OEM Michelin tires on my one ton and was looking at them today and was wondering just how many miles I can safely expect to get out of them before replacement. I had planned on replacing them with Michelin again, but was wondering if someone out there had any opinions on other brands. I have been happy with the Michelin and have had no problems other than one flat. Was considering the 19. 5's, but can't afford new tires and wheels.

I have 90,000 on my Michelin tires... after looking them over they would still pass inspection should I ever move back to New York State:)

I'm always amazed by how long some peoples tires last. I have just replaced my OEM Michelin tires at just under 30,000 mi. I admit that they still had some tread left, but it is starting to snow on the highways here and they were no longer safe for winter driving. They were down to the wear indicators in some spots (i. e. outside fronts). The factory tires are hard to beat. I went to great length to find a heavy duty tire that had a tread pattern that wouldn't add to my steering wander issues, but alas, truck wanders more with the new tires than the old Michelins. :(

I am sure I'll only have to wait another 30,000 mi before I can switch back!

It sounds like everyone so far are happy with the Michelin. So far I don't see any tread wear indicators showing, but I carry a 11. 5 slide in and it is probably around 5,000 lbs. We are leaving on a trip to AZ after the first of the year and with that much weight, I like to play it safe. Only problem is I hate to part with the $1,000. 00 for replacements. I run with 80 lbs of air in both the front and rear tires. Rough riding on some highway, but with the Rancho 9000's I can usually adjust it to where it is tolerable.

Thanks for the input.

I have 67,000 on the fronts, which have never been rotated or balanced, once zero balanced new. The rears were used off one of my other trucks that had almost 25k on them when I put them on.

They are Michelins 235X85X16 LTX M/S

My truck came with Goodyears that were well on their way at 21,000. They did not ride very well either. Truck now has 88K on it. Gonna need some rears real soon.

Michelin

Keep an eye on the wear indicators; depending upon your driving habits and road conditions where you live, you should get at least another 10K out of them. I got 66K out of my factory set and that was without rotating them regularly. I expect to get the same out of the second set, maybe better. I plan on rotating them more frequently.

I've got 57,000+ on my Michelins. they still have 65% tread left. I run mostly highway. I plan on buying the same tire for replacement at about 130,000 miles:D

tire size

I think the difference in mileage with Michelins comes from the size. Didn't the 01's and up come with 265/75s? My 99 came with the 245/75s and I got 51k out of them with aggressive driving habits. They were good for another 10k yet, but winter driving calls for good rubber.

From the way it sounds 55,000 on a set of Michelins is about average. I hate the thought of investing $1,000. 00 in a set of tires I have never tried on this truck. I have had Michelins on my two previous trucks and my wife's car, and they have been very reliable, so I guess I will just install another set of Michelins.

Oo.

I went from the 245's to the 265's ... Michelin LTX/MS. Running 40 in the rear & 50 in the front. Is that what pressures you'all are running with that tire?

I deliver campers with my 02' and have logged 71,000 miles on the original set of Michelins and they still have 60% tread left! I'm hoping for 120k from them. I've rotated tires every 10-12k and run 75PSI front, 65 PSI rear in them. I'd think they'd be tough to beat...

How do you guys get so many miles out of your tires :{ ? I have 61,000 miles on my truck and I am on the 4th set of tires. I have tried every brand of tire you can imagine in both sizes 265/75/26 and 285/75/26. This most recent set has lasted almost 15,000 miles and they are bald. The truck is perfectly lined up and the tires wear perfectly, they just wear. I would love to see just 20,000 miles out of a tire. Which tires have you had the best luck with. O-yes, the factory michlins lasted only 9,000 miles. I am a sensible driver (that means no burn outs), though the roads here in western PA totally suck.

RGilbert that sucks :( Have you tried Michelin? I also think that running a little mare air than less is better for overall wear. At least on a 3500. I noticed with the Michelins on my 2000 3500QC 4x4 that the rears never wore at all but the fronts wore more on the outside edges.

RGilbert ... were they the AT's or the LTX/MS?

In a tire thread some months ago someone contacted Michelin & the /MS has a tougher tread compound & lasts longer.

The dually guys got the 2500 boys beat, hands down on mileage. :{

If you have the limited slip rear, expect the tire life to be shorter. Any kind of driving on gravel or sand will also significantly wear the tires. I find my rear tires wearing at about three times the rate of the fronts.

My dad's 93 W350 dually gets about 25k on the rears with the tough Goodyear Workhorses, and squeezes 40k out of the fronts. Of course, those are with the small 215/85s.

I have been running 80 lbs all around on mine. I was looking at them again yesterday, and I would say I could easily get at least another 10,000 or possibly more out of them.

Currently I have about 55,000 on them and most of it has been hauling the slide in camper. About 95% of the mileage has been freeway mileage. The rears seem to have less tread on them right now, but I rotated them about a year ago.

I always like to play it safe when it comes to tires. I have had some blow outs that were catastrophic, and could have resulted in a bad accidents, so I like to get the best tire I can afford that will give me the best margin of safety.

I have Goodyear workhorses on my fiver and have had several failures on those, but I couldn't find many sources for 950x16. 5's, so I have had to stick to the Goodyears.

Front tires cupping on inside

Has anyone else had any problems with the front tires cupping on the inside ????

I replaced the upper ball joints, but not the lower ball joints as they didn't show the same wear as the uppers.

Truck has 104,000.

Does anyone know what causes the tires to cup??

I'm sure shocks play a part ,but to what extent??

Is it usually a combination of things that need to be corrected??

Cupping is usually caused by to much tow in. this can be adjusted by your tie rod. The distance between the front of your wheels should be less tan the distance betwwen the rear of your wheels. This helps your truck to track straight down the road. If the wheels are towed in to much , the tires will cup on the outside.
