Tire pressure monitoring

I already have a IR thermometer.



Any one using something like this?

I want to avoid a serious tire failure. Since my trailer is heavy and repairs to the wheels, wheel wells or an accident can be avoided by knowing if you are losing pressure, this seems like the way to go.



Any experienced opinions?

Tire Gage

I have five trailers and haul a lot.



I use a simple tire gage, and look at my tires. I wouldn't want a device that made me not look at my tires.



Also, I use the maximum or more air in my tires. Less heat.

I caught a complete Goodyear tread just when it began separating and got a set of 5 tires free on my RV, no damage to RV.



I'd have missed it if I hadn't looked at my tires, depending on a monitor.

Good advise Wayne, Thanks, I plan on closely watching my tires too. I also want to know if one starts to lose pressure while I'm underway. Having a system to monitor them would not eliminate the need to look at them at each stop as well.

Smartire System

Go to Smartire.com and check out their RV system. I have been using this system since 2002 on my truck and trailer. IMHO its the only way to go. It measures temperature and pressure and pressure deviation from setpoint. It also automatically compensates for the increase in tire pressure due to heating from driving. It has user adjustable alarm setpoints and is a real time monitoring system. By pushing a button on an in cab display you can check any tire's pressure and temperature (up to 20 tires). Its only draw back (besides price) is that you have to dismount the tires to install the pressure transmitters which go on the deep dish portion of the rims. I agree that you should visually check your tires frequently but that has not prevented me from having two blowouts in the last 10 years and I am a tire maintenance nut.
