Tire pressure recommendation on 285 BFG ATs?...

Right now I'm running ~50psi in the fronts, 40psi in the rears.



Anything less up front and it sags too much for my liking. I know there are some formulas floating around out there for figuring optimal pressure, but I haven't been to the scale yet to figure out my front and rear weights.

Tire pressure

I believe the formula was the tire rating x 2 then weight of axel divided by the answer which gives you a percent then you multiply the maximum PSI with that percent.



Example for a 285/16/D

Max tire rating(single) = 3305 x 2 = 6610

axel scale weight = 3200 / 6610 = . 484 (48. 4%)

air pressure = 65 psi x 48. 4% = 31. 5psi



If the memory is still working, I believe my 99 weighed 4100 on the front which calculates to around 40psi.

I'm running 45lbs. front and 40 rear on a 7K lb. truck. Toyo 285/75/16's have 20K on them with excellent wear pattern. Rotate every 5K.



I tried the formula and the numbers came out way lower than I thought was credible. I know some on this site run much higher than me, but until I see bad wear patterns I'm staying with these.

KO's and the last two sets I have had got over 40,000

miles with them. I do "rotate" them every 10-12,000

miles though.

I run 55psi in mine. I think the sidewall says 60psi cold.

Is this with stock rims. If not, what width rims?



I just put a set of BFG AT 285-75-16s on my stock rims. At 60 psi in the rear, the edges don't touch the ground. I think I'll try 55/50.

Yes Blakers, that is with stock 6. 5" wide wheels. On a reg cab you may need to drop all the way back to 42-45 PSI to get the back tires flat on the road.

I think I'm running about 55 up front with 295 BFG AT's, on the 16X8 rims.



New question: With my 295's, at full lock I get some tire rub. Do the 285's clear at full lock?

i run 43 in the front,37 rear. i came to these #'s use chalk line on the tires. make 3-4 chalk lines all the way across the tread, drive a short distance mabey 200 yrds and then look at wear the chalk is worn off it you are properly inflated the chalk will wear even,over inflated it will wear more on middle,over more on outside edges... good luck

i have 285-75-16 bfg at ko's on the stock 6. 5 rims.

i run 45 in the front and 30 in the rear. where i fuel

up the concrete pad is usually dusty and i look at my

tires for the tread to be covered by the dust. i started

at 60 and 50 and have worked my way down.

love these tires. no comparison to the the whimpy

stock michelin tires. plan on rotating them every 10000

miles. shooting for 60000 out of them.

Your tires are going to contact the road differently at low speed than they will at highway speed. Low speed or dust while rolling slowly does not tell the whole story. Keep an eye on the wear.

I have a short bed 2001 HO 4x4 , and have tried about every kind of tire , BFG, Goodyear, MT's etc. and have found the best tire presure for max. wear (empty) to be 42 psi in front and 32 psi on rear!

With my 285 BFGs, 45 in the rear and 50 up front seems to work well so far with no load.

Just replaced a set of BFG 285X16 AT's at 52K, still legal. They were mounted on M/T 8X16 alloys, rotated every 10 or 12K. Started with 50psi but could'nt stand the sloppy handling. Ended up at 60psi front, 58psi rear. I carry 1000 to 1200 lbs in the bed all the time and drive the truck hard and fast. The outsides of the tires wore the most, still tread in the middle when I took them off. I guess this would indicate that Idid'nt have them over inflated. Nice strong tires. We went into the national forest just before they came off. Crossed lots of down trees, rocks slides, etc. No punctures even with worn out tires.
