Tire question

I'm looking for some nice tires for my truck. I dont do any off roading so thats not a concern. I tow about 30% of the time. Looking for something that will last now that my trac bar and ball joints are up to snuff. Those two bad boys ate up my present set in about 20k. Dont even wanna hear good/badyear mentioned. Had too much trouble with my goodyear marathorn in the sides. (2 blowouts on one trip)Any particular tires youve been happy with ,let me here about it. thanks in advance.

I'm running Good/badYear ATS tires ... getting around 60K on them ... rotate every 6K ... I have 160k on the truck



Factory Michelins only lasted less than 29K ... . went to the (bad) year tires ... a hybrid tire that a friend of mine in New Orleans ( who owns a tire dealership) recommended . . well they were not that great ... put on the ATS at around 60K ... . those ones were good ... I replaced with lotsa tread left at around 116K ... still on the second set of ATS ... ... . and PLENTY of tread left .....

In 1992 I put Michelin 235/85/16 XPS Traction Tires (Load Range E) on my 92 4X4. Todate they have approx. 90,000 Km on them and can get at least another 10,000 Km. No problems with them and will replace them with the same tire.

These are doing good so far (<10k miles, but I like them). Plus I was able to get D range in my size. Fairly inexpensive.

I have the BFG A/T KO's in 285/75/16D on my truck. They are rated to carry more weight than the stock 245 or 265 in an E rating too. I have gotten over 50K out of the first set, had the season been different I could have gone 60K easily. Winter was starting and I changed them to get better slick road performance. The ride and drive is great, and traction is excellent in all but sticky mud and deep slush.



These tires are expensive, but I put another set on and when these are gone I will buy another set. They are that good, the price per mile compared to other tires is as good if not better since they last so long. Hope this helps.

I have the factory wheels as well and do not have any trouble with them wearing centers or any of that, they wear FLAT on mine. I have been told a thousand times that the wheels are too narrow for the tires too, maybe in the next 80K miles of running them I will start to see it, the last 80K has not shown it. My sarcasm is not directed at you, but at all the "experts" that say I will have problems with my tires. The wheels are norrower than what BFG recommends, but it works great.

I wish bfg would get smart and make a load range E in the size that came on our truck. 265-75R16 I like the Michelin so far in that size.

LSMITH - glad that you haven't had problems. I talked to some that did and some that didn't. I wasn't real keen on the tire pressures some were running to keep wear at a minimum. Since the 255/85 is the same height as the 287/75 (and what I really wanted was 315/75), I decided to go that route.

Just put 285/75/16 Yokohama geolander a/ts on I really do like them so far.

Michelins

I'm getting real close to a new set of skins also. I have had real good luck wit the stock Micelin MS tires, 64K and counting. From what I can tell another 7 to 10K and I'll be on rubber bands.



But anyway, I've been looking at the Michelin 245/75R/16 ATX model. Anyone used these?



Most of my miles are on blacktop but for those times offroad I think these will be the ones to have.



Like those Michelin tires, then Generals... ... .

I've got 34,000 on my original Michelins and they still have quite a bit left. So far they are wearing very evenly. I've rotated them around 5,000 mile intervals.

Michlien 265/75/16 LTX m/s E rated lasted me 37,000 towing at or near max most of the miles. Rotated every 6,000 miles. I heard the firestone steelflex's are doing pretty good. Their cost is less than the Mich's. I just got 4 Micheiln 265/75/16 LTX a/t's E rated for $400. mounted and balanced(they gave me them the OE wheels so they didn't have to mount and dismount). So I also got 4 new wheels. I could of got the firestones for $65 each + mount and bal. All the tire shops claim the firestones have been issue free but the name scares me. It is funny how Fords come with generals or firestones. The tires are another thing I liked about the Dodge.

WCrovo, where did you find those Michelines for that price The best price I've gotten is $160, mount and balance. Please tell me, I'm going to be in need of tiers here in a week or so. Tax money buying them and shocks!

I got in the phone book and started calling every tire shop in the area. Gave them the info and asked iff they had any take offs. There were lots of deals out there if you live in a metro area. The Michelins are a little harder to find. Timing is everything. The Firestones came highly recommended and were $65. I was glad I found the Michelins but all the info I got was the Firestone steelflexs were doing well, some felt better than the Michelins. The Michelin m/s gets a better overall rating than the a/s 's on one of the internet tire places. The Firestones weren't rated. Generals suck, both my buddys with F's had warr. issues with their Generals. Good luck.

If you don't want mud tires Go with the michelin XPS tractions, my dad runs them on the CTD on the gravel for the farm and almost never has flats, he NEVER rotates, and doesn't get them rebalanced because they hold their balance. He can get away without rotating because he can use self control at the stopsigns They are a little more expensive but if you don't need them rebalanced or flats then it pays for it self. VERY GOOD TIRE!! I prefer the BF goodrich MT for the more aggressive tread and docile road manners. For my play truck off road its super swamper tsl's until I get the BOGGERS!! Hope this helps.

Had the Firestones atx on my 97 fo** stroke for 40k mi and still looked like new, wore like iron but had puckers in the seat covers when on rain or snow as they had traction like iron. You get what you pay for. If I could get away with street treads I would get the big "M's". I took my oem M's off at 10k mi after getting stuck in the back lot of a truckstop (It was dry, just a couple inches of sand ) but did like them for wet pavement traction, ride quality and sidewall stability.

You spent 30+k for the truck don't try to go cheap on the tires. They are all thats between you and the road.

I had a set of firestone steeltex's on my last truck which was an extended cab short box and I would have to say they did last and last and last with lots of pulling miles on them but they deffinatelly gave you some seriose pucker factor, when the weather was bad so was the traction. They also walked around alote when I drove through corners or over freshly milled road. I wouldn't buy them again for my pullin truck but for my around home work truck I would give-em a thumbs up!!!

Someone mentioned the 255/85 size way up there earlier in the thread. I ran the BFG MT on a 16x8 wheel. The 255 fits nicely in the wheelwell opening and doesn't stick out past the fender like a wider tire will.
