What is a siped tire?
Well I had to go to the great google and find out what a siped tire is. I now know that when the tread on the bottom of my swampers (rubber sole boots) became worn smooth and I used my jack knive to make many cuts across them, I was creating siped swampers.
I can remember that the local gas stations had a process called tractionizing. This consisted of two rollers the size of a large coffee can that was studded with sharp nails about every 1/2 inch. These nails were about 3/8 long. The rear tires were placed on the rollers and the car ran at a low rate of speed for a few minutes. The finished product was a surface that would remind you of a sponge. A freshly tractionized set of tires would let you drive anywhere on ice or snow. My local tire dealer acted like he never heard of such a device but he might not be old enough to have seen them.
