Vacuum leak question question

I am about to buy some new tires for my rig (2009 Ram 2500 - 6. 7 Cummins). OEM are 265/70R17. I was wondering what the manufacturer’s Max. tire width is for my stock rims? I’m going to go with the Nitto Terra Grapplers, but cannot decide whether to purchase 285/75R17 E or 305/70R17 E. So I was hoping the Max. tire width would make the decision for me. Thank you for your input.

P. S. I am going to install the Carli Suspension Starter System (3” front lift and 1” rear lift) and Carli adjustable track bar in conjunction with the tire upgrade (just in case this information is relevant).

the 285's are technically as wide as you should go on an 8" wheel, but i run 295's without any issues. the 305's are a bit wide. people run 305's on 8" wheels, but the handling is a little sloppy. the tires will have approved wheel widths stamped on the sidewall. hope this helps.

The Nitto Terra Grapplers in 285/70R17 10ply are approved for 7. 5 to 9 inch wide rims. The 285/75R17 10plys are approved for 7. 5-9. 5 inch wide wheels. The 305/70R17s are approved for use on 8. 0-9. 5 inch wide wheels. These are all from the Nitto Terra Grappler book for 2010. I have mounted several sets for both customers and myself on narrower wheels, and not had any issues as long as the tire stays inflated. Low pressures will result in sidewall damage. I've even mounted 325/70R17s on stock wheels, both dually and 3/4 ton, and not had any issues not related to road hazards. But they are not approved for use on rims that narrow from the manufacuturer.

I had a set of Cooper Discoverys size 315-70-17 on my 05 quad cab 4x4 they worked just fine with only slight rubbing on the upper controll arms at full hard over steering

I ran 285's and they were just on the limit of what I consider acceptable... The 255/80's I run now are perfect!

My 285-75-17's on stock wheels have worn in the center a bit prematurely due to overinflation(65 psi). Next set will be inflated to 55-60 psi. I'd have to insist on a 9" wide rim for 315's if I got them. I'd still love a 275-80-17 tire,but alas,nothing out there. :{

I have the 305's from Nitto on the stock rims and they work for me with no rubbing. I do have the Kore Chase system on the truck. The extra width or maybe just the tire is wearing better than my 285's I had previously. I only got 28K with Toyo AT in the 285 (75% towing time). The Nitto 305's have been holding up better for me (10K toatal with 8K towing). I should see closer to 35K total the way it looks right now.
