shocking isn't it?

I too get static electrocuted from both my vehicles, but only when the humidity is low, like 350 days a year :D.

I find that I'm in the habit of holding the door frame on exit. I think the amount of static discharge is the same as getting shocked, it's just spread out over a longer duration, so it's just a tingle ;).

I've tried anti-static spray, works good for about 2 days. My clothes get the drier sheet treatment, whether I want them to smell spring rain fresh or not.

A grounding strap from the body sounds like a good idea

Mike,

The post from tbudder does a good job explaining it. I see you are using cooper tires. Rubber is nonconductive but most tire manufacturers add conductive components to the mix to help conduct the static to ground. Tires vary in conductivity and you may just have some that are very good insulators. This also affects communications equiipment. Static build up can cause havoc in CB/HAM equipment and explains why recption often seems cleaner when you are stopped than when you are moving.

The ground strap will fix it.

Good posts guys!

Thanks for all the info here, now I just have to find a grounding strap, I can't remember where I got the one for the GMC GENERAL 5 Star I use to run. If I cant find a strap would a piece of chain work like we have on our firetrucks?

With all this talk of a grounding strap, where would you put it? Is this something you grab before you get out or what are you grounding out?

My work truck is a little chevy s-10 . Certain times of the year the shocks are killers. Grabbing the door does not work. I grab the top of the cab above my head and slide out works quite well.

Just about any NAPA store should carry grounding straps. I work on pipelines which are commonly located under major power lines and when we leave our trucks sitting under the power lines the shock you get when you try to get in will almost knock you down. I put 2 grounding straps on the hitch and let them drag from there. By putting 2 on I don't get near as many people trying to stop me to tell me I have something dragging. I guess they realize that them belong there.
