Ok so I have the auto trany taken care of and exh brake is worth every penny. But now that I have my guages and have done a couple of trips with them I am wondering why the Fords are walking away from me when they have more load. I am starting to wonder if I have something wrong with my engine or if I just need to start BOMMING or what?

So, I have never seen over 16# of boost. I read somewhere on here that boost x 10 == HP? If so my 200 HP engine is only putting out 160 HP? This is an Auto and a California truck so, did I get screwed by the government as well? :)

EGT has hit 1200 but I have never run long above 1150. More like 1100 and below for any long period. 1100 I get worried, 1200 was just to see what it would take to get there.

It has been sugested that an Egde EZ is all I really need to make a good performer with the 3000# camper and 7000# trailer. I have weighed the entire rig and when you add in the wife and dog I should be under 16,500# total, loaded truck, camper, trailer, and jeep. I am thinking exhaust would help a bit as well.

The only reservation I have about more modifications is some of the posts I have read about these boxes putting too much stress on the fuel system or engine. I worry about things a lot until I do them and run with them a while and then I feel better about them. I am kind of a show me kind of guy but as the subject says... ;) All my buddies have Fords and they are constantly pulling away from me. This is not so much a competition but I know the cummins is a better engine and I wonder how with so little load I can be so under powered? Besides this is a recreation thing and every hour spent driving is less beer time if you know what I mean!

So, do the Edge EZ boxes really cause many problems? Would exh be better first, second, or not at all?

Thanks for listening again,

Ira

The EZ should not (for my sake as well) put that much stress on the system. Open up the Air in and out (hi flow air filter and exhaust system) and drop in some injectors. That should cure the "bringing up the rear" syndrome. The EZ will help keep the EGT's in check with the bigger injectors, as well as the air flow.

:( Don't know if this will help, but here goes. You have guages, My assumption is that you have boost, exhaust temp, and propably a transmission temp. This is good. Your engine will perform and more than likely it sounds as if your bone stock on the engine but have taken the time to beef up the transmission. This is good. ;) Next step will be to make a decision on how much money you want to spend. Remember though, that the amount spent is directy proportional to the amount of flowers you get for the wife. ;) :D The more, the better:rolleyes: . You can go with bigger injectors for more horse. 275's will provide good low end tq for you and if you couple them with either an EZ or and EZ-Comp you will have a very nice combination. Exhaust is also a choice. 4 inch will allow you to push more fuel and keep the temps down. The EZ-Comp can be turned on or off as desired, but be warned, you need to keep a sharp eye on the exhaust temp. The EZ is a good 10 minute install with the elbow and will provide you with a nice increase in power. Good luck on the flowers for the wife, if you have any money left over. :D :D

Another 2 cents worth,,,,,Gauges first, especially FP (don't leave home without it!!)..... Air in ( I have Scotty, but don't recommend)... . Air out ( I lost my muffer somewhere--I swear Officer?!?)... . EZ works great on my truck... . finally go find those DORF's and show them some tail lights ( friends don't let friends drive fords!!!) R, J. B. ;)

could someone elaborate on this. ive never read it, or heard anything of the sort. is this even remotely accurate???

16 psi boost and 1200* don't sound right even for a stock Kalifornia truck, have you checked the intercooler boots for leaks?

RV275

RV275 are a nice touch and it a 1-1/2 hour install with a little practice, I heard that a few fellas have done it in 30 minutes at bombing parties. It give good bottom end for pulling hills, Wife likes hers.

CTD Upgrades

I'm kinda in the same boat as you but my brother & brother in law both drive 02 Cummins... . I just had a DTT installed & when I financially recover from that the bombing will start.

I have been told that an EZ & DDII's are the towing combination that you want. 300 HP+ at the rear wheels & it'll be a towing machine! About $1100 & then of course "Air in & Air out" will have to shortly follow. Another $600-$700 there & hopefully would be safe on EGT's. Of course if that wasn't enough then a larger turbo would run another $600-$700... ... ... .

It's a "slippery slope" when you begin! Both my brother & brother in law are running EZ's & one has 275's & the other DD1's & both are real happy with the performance they see. Both running stock exhaust & the one with DD1's has a AFE Mega Cannon... ...

They both don't intend on going any further than they are because they both pull trailers approx. 8000# and have no problems.....

# boost x 10 = RWHP

I think it was Piers who first posted that on this forum (If I should have given someone else the credit---I am sorry). It was explained that it can be used as a "rough" indicator of HP until you get to the "outer limits". I am sure type of turbo and size of exh housing also come into play.

I got the guages on 3 trips ago. I have a K&N filter installed from way back. Just did that to let it breath, don't know if it really made a change or not. I felt at the time I got better mileage (1/2 mpg?)

But it has been some time since I put it in and I think it needs to be cleaned. I saw a decrease in mileage on this last trip but I had a bad headwind and other factors which might have attributed to that?

Yes it is a stock engine. I can't say for sure if I was only getting 16# of boost at 1200 deg? At the time I was not watching the boost guage but I know at 1100 I am only getting 16#.

Thanks for all the replies,

Ira

just DO IT!

Comp/DDUFM and DD2's.

But call the transmission folks and make sure that it'll take it.

The beauty of the PE Comp/DDUFM is the flexibility. You can run it "on up there" when running around unloaded and then you can dial it in to what EGT's you can stand while towing. One trip might be heavier/hillier/hotter/head windier;) than another. 2x4 may be good one day and 3x5 the next.

Sub-levels 1 and 2 defuel below stock, so you can manage any size injector with that.

And dump the muffler for at least a straight through type, or even better 4 or 5 inch exhaust.

1300 is the number to watch for on long pulls. 1400-1500 is fine for short bursts of FUN.

You'll have camp set up and a cold one open before the PoSD's get there. They'll need a radio to keep in touch with you on the hills.

:D :-laf Oo.

Bomb It, But check your boost!

You really need to check that boost pressure. You should be seeing 20-22 psi with a load and throttle, even bone stock. Low boost will cause high egts AND low power. Once this is corrected, bombs away. I'd go straight to a Comp for the adjustability, then if you want more, injectors. At the very least, stay with those Fords, but there is no reason you can't blow by them if you desire :D JimG

Yeah, the boost seems low. Mine would make 22-23 before the elbow.

Pressurize the system with the engine off and listen for leaks. I'd use about 30 psi.

If you find no leaks, try adjusting the wastegate actuator rod.

Is Dave Fritz's info wrong? I'm getting my boost guage reading from the plug in the side of the head (drivers side) & there right in line with what Dave has posted?

Clay:--)

dunno

dodgeram ain't loading right now.

It may be a Commifornia truck thing. Isn't your truck rated for 215 hp? Try to find some more stock '99ers with gauges. (Good luck, as we all put gauges on to start the BOMBfest).

Maybe your gauge isn't right.

I'd check with Piers or Kieth and STILL check for leaks--it's too easy not to.

Don't worry the EZ/Comp and/or injectors WILL bring your BOOST UP.

Oo.

Stupid question. Do you have a bug deflecton on your truck? A buddy of mine has a cab over camper. He installed a bug deflector on his truck and lost 7 mph on a hill climb right out of his house. He checked everything on the truck to find a possible problem. He finally removed the bug deflector (because that was the last thing he did to the truck before the power loss) and go figure. He got the speed back. I guess the bug deflector was deflecting the air right into the space between the cab and the camper causing a parachute effect. :-laf
