My Alaskan Malamute has often been looked towards for a solution to winter traction. Unfortunatly we have made her so comfortable on the couch, that I swear I hear her laughing every time I get the snowmobile stuck. Her fur is great for keeping the wildlife out of the garden.

Our Husky would help (half Mal), but he is such a lunatic I'd probably find him dead under the snowmobile after he tried to mate with it.

Our two hybrids are up to any snow challenge, but for one problem... No interest in pulling anything until it is totally dead and half eaten. . #ad

Oh well, have to keep looking for tires...

The 285/75 is a taller and wider tire than stock. I am going to mount a 255/85 on the stock 6. 5" wheel instead of a 285/75. The 255 is the same height as the 285 it is just a narrower tire so it will cut into the snow better. The cutting into is very important on the yet to be plowed sloppy roads.

The 255's are a difficult tire size to find, but fortunately the best tires I've ever owned are offered in that size, Dunlop Radial Rover RV. This is a great AT tire with a slightly more agressive tread pattern than most AT's.

Sorry I just looked that you have a 2001. In your case I would go with the 285. There is probally not a lot of traction differene between the 255 and 285, heck the truck weighs between 6500 and 7000lbs.

Unfortunately the Rover RV's are not offered in a 285, so the Cooper Discover AT's are a quiet mildly patterened tire or if your looking for some descent traction, good wear, and a not very noisy agressive tire the Cooper Discover ST's (I think that's what they are) are the way to go. We have a set of these on a Chevy work truck and for the first 5000 miles they have been great.

The absolute best tire I have ever bought... my BFG 285/75/16 all-terrains! They're mounted on my stock alloy SLT wheels and have great traction and no singing noise what-so-ever. I have 30k miles on them now and they are just barely half worn. We don't get snow like the east does, butI take my tuck up to Snoqualmie and drive around just fine in unplowed snow.

Choose the tire that you like for the conditions you'll be operating in, then in
deep snow chain up both ends; not just the
front. Its a lot easier on the power train
and if you still get stuck, at least you'll
know that you tried. Use some sort of chain
tensioner or tarp straps to keep the slack
out of them. Some people who are real serious put their chains on an aired down tire, then inflate and cut off any spare links. If you chain up both ends, I don't think you'll need traction bars. It usually
takes the wheel hop out.

WOW! That is alot of input guys. I thankyou very much. I will have to take a look at all of these and see what I think will work. I hadn't considered Toyo for my truck, but that is a good looking tread pattern. I will do some comparison shopping. I think it will be hard to find anyone that even knows what sipping is here in SoCal.
David VT- I feel your pain #ad
My Newfies are spoiled couch potatoes. You gotta' love 'em though. Besides, if it wasn't for them, I would never have been able to get this truck. She'll do anything for the Newfys #ad
They have it sooooo good #ad

My sister brought home a young Newfy when she left the airforce in '73. Promptly left the gentle giant in the basement of my folks home and went looking for a man. My poor parents had no idea what to do with the monster who chewed and slobbered on everything in the basement until they found a home for him. He lived out his life with a well to do couple in CT and then No. CA when they left corporate america for the bed and breakfast thing. Man that dog was a monster, but my sister was a real putz for dumping him on my folks.

As to chains, sure if you chain up the entire truck you will do better than just two tires. My point was if you only run two, run them up front where they have a chance of really helping you out. I doubt that four chains will make up for what the traction bars can do for holding your teeth in, but who really knows... .

I'm running Michelin LTX/AT 245 75 16's on my dually all the way around. They don't have the cupping problems my stock Goodyears had and have a more aggresive tread than the LT's. I plow snow and have no comlaints. They are better than anything else I've tried and the don't hum or howl going down the road. I've got about 15K on them and it looks like they should last for about another 50 or 60K. My father had a pair on his Ford and had 80K on them when he traded for his new Ram, and they had about 5K left in them.

I have Coopers on my ram, can't seem to wear them out, they are not noisy, have good traction.
I highly recommend them,, I do not own stock in the company.

I have problems with my LTXs. They seem to wander when running low air for smoother ride(60#)rear and (80#)front when empty. They do run well in wet or snowy conditions. I am thinking of Toyos for my next 40000 miles.

Try the Bridgestone Duelers AT 285's. I have 40,000 on them and still going. Smooth and quiet. A true "round" tire.

What's the difference between the Dunlop A/T's and the RV's? The web site lists the A/T's as having a 60k mile warranty. Seems like that would mean they are a better made tire than the RV's. Which is really an A/T tire?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave I have owned both. The RV's a a little more agressive tread. The AT's are a little more of a street tire than the RV's, hence the 60,000 mile warranty. The RV's were not loud on the street at all but they just have a more open tread pattern. I only had the RV's 11,000 miles before I sold the truck, but they were wearing very good. The AT's had 26,000 when got rid of them, and were wearing well too, but they certainly wouldn't make it to 60,000 IMO.

I will be purchasing tires soon again, and I'm planning on purchasing the RV's. I like the little more agressive tread and I don't think the AT's will out last them by much, if any.

FYI - The RV's tread goes all the way to the bottom of the tread depth, but there are parts to the AT's tread that don't.

i run a 4x4 duelly , which bybythemselves r
bad in the snow, diesel weight and 4 in back

i tow trk driver friend on mine, drives
many a 4x4 young kid w/ no expr out of the snow when stuck i airs down the tires
and drivers them out he make $100. 00 many times a year doing this, he may drive out
say 1 hour w/ tow trk but most of the time
drops air pressure and come out w/ the young
drivers.
i run 10 psi in back in snow
and added 1000 lbs in bed helps a lot
iair down to where duellys are close to rubbing each other , going with more or
close to reckomanded air works on the race track best , try and expr w. /air
and weight i also agree chains on front
but watch the rear from passing you
i once put chains on a 72 bronco
on front got through bumper height snow
on a raised bronco but was going up hill
down hill steep i might put on rears
to keep the rear behind you
bill ps maybe we can demo
with some snow in vegas in may haha

Michelin X Radial LT in 235x85. Costco & a real good price. #ad
They work really good for me.

Tall & narrow for hwy ice & snow. Ck out the rally cars. As soon as they do packed snow & ice, out come the tall narrow guys. These boys are looking for every traction advantage.
