Well I'm the market for tires also but I don't need any off road type. I need a long wearing highway tread tire. I now run my truck empty (sold 5ver will get one next yr) commuting back and forth to work. Need to have a smooth and quite tire. I'm open to all mfgs as long as they aren't crap.

i don't like promoting michelin but their xps rib is a real nice highway tire
. My last set were the BFG Commercial Highway tires and I loved them!
I have had Michelinsand BFG all terrains but these were the best yet. I have just put on the BFG Commercial Traction tire and so far like it too but it has a little noise(hardly noticable). The commercial all weathers lasted about 55,000 miles no problems. Have great wet traction and are surprisingly good off road.

The XPS Rib was recommended to me prior to my last purchase. I needed a little more aggressive tread tire so I went with the Michelin XPS Traction instead. The XPS Rib is supposed to be a great wearing and driving tire.

Finaly, somebody with 2wd asking tire opnions.
On my 98 I installed Cooper SRMII's (the ones pictured on the RS of this link) after the Badyear's went bad (which was real quick). I put over 45K miles on them, and they still had 1/2 the tread left when I traided the truck.
they worked great in Water, were quiet, even worked well in a couple inches of snow. My 2002 has the Mitchelns on it, if I need to buy tires withing the 5 years I will own it, it will again be Cooper SRMII's
Plus the price was great. My 245/75-16's were around $130. oo mounted and balanced, and the 235/85's are even less

Well I really like the XPS tires, but boy sure want a lot of money for them $170 at tirerack.com I was thinking in the $105-140 range. The set I have on now are the Firestones R4, not crazy about them. Coopers look good, I really like a tire that will go 80K. Maybe the next 80K I'll spring for the 19. 5 or 22's http://www.chromewheel.com/

BFG Commercial TA Tractions
Just had BFG Comm TA Tractions installed at BJ's for 112 a piece. With about 2000 miles on them I like them alot but obviously can't speak to the treadwear yet. If money were no option then I would get the XPS Tractions. I think these are a good lower price substitute.

I bought a new set of tires and they were crap. They were

Later on I received a recall for the tires. I would not run those tires on a wheel borrow. I bought Michelin and I am happy with those tires. I would use Coopers or Toyos also. Firestone is not on the list. lol JimK

I too, have been told that the Michelin XPS is a great wearing road tire. I found the best price so far, to be at www.1010TIRES.COM. They even have a shipping calculator built in so you can enter your zip and get a total price, hopefully without surprises.

You can get commercial highway tires in 16" sizes. I have a 4x and wanted M/S rating. So I had to upgrade to Rickson 19. 5's to get M/S.
My tire guy found Michellins and possible one other straight highway tire in 16" sizes. They will ride a little harsher on rough roads but should last like the 19. 5's.
Commercial (C) tires are different than light truck (LT). They are heavier and can be gotten in higher load ranges. You can typically regrove them and also retread them.
Rickson claims that they last 2. 5-3x over the LT tires.
I have had much of the same experience on the old Ford that I once owned. It came with load range C. We replaced with load range D and they lasted longer. The final set was load range E and I had to throw the tires away before all the tread was worn out because the side walls had rotted. They were over 10 years old.

Just wondering, why did you have to upgrade to the Rickson's to get M/S rating. Both the BFG Commercial 16" tires are M/S rated and the All Weather even has a Z speed rating.

I've found that after locating tires online, purchasing them, paying for shipping and then paying someone local to install them..... I come out almost exactly the same by buying from my local dealer. I might even pay a bit more, but he's there to provide the free rotation and balance every 5K miles. My computer has yet to provide that service

Cowboybarbar: I wanted 2 things: M/S rated tire with a little more traction that what I have. I also wanted a load range F or G commercial (C) tire. I could get a C tire in a 16" diameter but not with an M/S rating. It was typically a highway rib. A highway rib is great for cruz'in down the interstate. The highway rib runs quiet, smooth and lasts a long time. It sucks big time when you hit some really wet snow like what we get in CA.
Most of the good traction tires in 16" sizes only come in load range C or D. It is tough to find them in load range E.
E's are what I got now and they look flat with the recomended 60PSI on the front axel. They wine if I push it hard into a corner.
In general an E rating is the most you can get for a 16" rim. Like I said my tire guy did find some F's in a highway rib in 16". But there was only 1 or 2.

Dan, I would also like to have the 19. 5's with the F or G range. Way cool
and safe, but big $$$. What is your opinion on the Michelin XPS Tractions? They are a commerical all steel tire that is retreadable with a good mud and snow tread design. but they only come in "E" rating. I have heard they wear better because the steel side wall keeps the tread flat on the curves, which is hard to do with the weight of the CTD up front. I have lifted one of the Michelin XPS tractions and then a Michelin LTX M/S in the 235/85/16 size and the Tractions are real heavy compared to the LTX tire.Dan. . I run XPS traction and see 60+K miles wear in them... . I live at 4K ft and see plenty O snow [in fact I have a snow plow also]... I also drive it like a slot car ... .
if your looking for the "magic" perfect tire it doesn't exist but the XPS in my application is the closest

Not to start a tire war but I did a little research on the tirerack .com and found the Yokohama Geolandar HT/S to be a little bit superior to the XPS in all areas/plus they have 60,000 mile tread warranty, Michelin did not seem to have any. I am going from 215/85/16 to 235/85/16. The tires only cost $88. a piece. Compared to $150 to $171 for the XPS. :-{} Ken
Kenny... no tire war here. . it's your $, spend'em any way you like . . this whole issue/thread is personal prefrence and expierence info. . that's what this forum is about IMHO
