Strutting up a 7% grade towing 15K

Well I am going to do it... will be ordering my MKW 19. 5's next month and am looking at tires to go on them. I live in the PAC NW... yes it rains here and I have had good experience with an All Season type tire on most of my vehicles. The CTD 2004 had factory GY SRA (17") which worked but had low mileage... sencond set was TOYO AT (17") all around (not 4x4) they worked well and allowed good rotation practices but still low mileage, so off to the world of 19. 5's I go. I like the idea of 6 alloy wheels that can be rotated to all positions... BUT NOW what tire? It is not a 4x.



I have looked at Bridgestone and Mich and GY open to all suggestions... would really like comments on the pros and cons of the tire you have? Pls don't let this become a thread about 19. 5's wheels... it is TIRES. THX All for your information and comments! Capt PJ

I am sure you have already seen my photos. I really like the way my 245s fit my 6. 75" wheels. Go for the lightest ply you can find. The Goodyear's run real flat on the pavement but do sing just a little. I purchased a 7th. MKW for my spare.

I have a 2002 WITH MICH 245 X 70 XRV 19. 5, I HAD THEM SIPED.
HEAVY DUTY LONG LASTING TIRES. WHEN SIPED UNREAL IN THE RAIN AND SNOW EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T LOOK LIKE IT. I HAVE 70,000 MILES ON MINE, EXPECT TO GET A TOTAL OF ABOUT 125,000+ ON THEM. TRICK IS NOT TO RUN THEIR SUGGESTED AIR PRESSURE! UNLESS YOU ARE LOADED OR TOWING

Cumminz and Monkeyman: I notice that both of you are doing highway type tread... got ask even so stated... ANy issues in the rain or getting out of mud and or snow... yes mine is only RWD dually? Wouldn't you think a more aggressive tread would be better for the PAC NW where is rains alot? THINGS are constantly wet for long periods of time even if rain is stopped. Capt PJ
 
My truck is a 4x4 Dually. They charged me $10. 00 per tire to get siped. In rain it made a huge difference, also in two wheel drive in snow. I noticed no difference with this tread in snow compared to otherrs I had, however as I said the siping made a difference, maybe spelled syped?:) Tires are to expensive to me to last 50,000 miles!

I had TOYO AT ( 17") almost worn out and yes I noticed a big diff with the sipe... I am thinking of doing that! Good to hear that someone else thinkds it is worthwhile. Capt PJ
 
I bought the kumho's and I'm very pleased with them so far. The 245's fill the wheel well nicely and have a bit more side wall than the 225's so its a little nicer/softer ride.

DHayden, Good looking tire... I see they do a 14 ply... is that the one? Any other comments regarding ride wear traction etc? THX Capt PJ
 
The ride is nice, speed bumps are somewhat rough because its added unsprung weight but that is common among 19. 5's not the specific tire itself. If you role the window down above 40 or so you can hear the tires sing a little, if the radio is on or your faster then that you wont notice it because the engine drowns it out, its not that loud.

It doesnt rain alot here so when it does its slicker than snot on a chickens lip when all that oil finally meets water. The tires have performed superb. During monsoon season the highway had a BUNCH of water on it, so much that the overhead mpg (though not accurate) went from 22mpg to 14mpg making many people pull over. I kept trucking with no hydroplane issues at about 67mph.

I have driven in wet weather and have not encountered any problems. Notice sand in photo with RV. When I first pulled thru the soft sand the truck stopped moving. I could have buried the rear. I slid it in 4x4 and pulled thru without spinning a tire. NO 4x2 with no matter what tire would have got stuck moving the RV.

I expect you would have got stuck. NICE RIG!!! BUT at least I would have a little more traction capability using non rib style tread design with my 4x2... I would hope. It has always seemed to work in other places I go like maintainedforest roads, primative camping sites, and general off the somewhat beaten path... No I am NOT trailblazing. . just following other who have. I am considering a front winch set up since i have a bumper that will hold it. Hope you had fun there! Capt PJ
 
I just bought a set of Michelin XDS2 for my truck. Real nice M/S tread pattern and they are siped from the factory. Rain and snow traction is supposed to be exceptional, haven't found out yet, but September is coming, and it won't be long before the snow flies again... ... ... ... 6 more months of crap, yahoo... ... .....

I looked at Michelin's site and it says this tire is a drive axle tire with limited all position tire.

I had a set of goodyear's (G124 IIRC) on my wheels when I bought them used. Terribly hard rubber and incredibly slick in the rain. I'm well beyond stock power but I could break the back end loose at 50 on wet asphault with those tires.



Running Yokahama TY303's now and much happier. I don't think they make them in the small sizes however, mine are 285/70/19. 5's

When I mounted 19. 5" tires on my trucks... we wanted the same tire that UPS uses and the same size as our F550 and 5500... for us its the 225... it fits the rim width correctly and has the correct clearance between the tires based on the rim offset...

Also, we wanted to run the bandag recap on the rear... a very good tire with excellent traction in the winter with suitable life... we now see 90K + miles on the rear, and we've been using either the Michelin or Bridgestone rib front tire... Since it easier to get the Bridgestone and it seems to be more in line with the rib design used on 11R24. 5 tires we've been it... The Bandag rear tire is the same tire used by UPS here in town for their delivery trucks. . so a supply of them is no problem...

On the F550 running at gross loads we'd often see over 100K miles on the steer tires and over 90K on the recaps... To date with 750K total miles on several sets of tires we had no problems... we've had a couple of nails but we plug those in house... On the 3500 dually's we like the extra safety margin.....
