Tires for towing

I am getting close to replacing the tires on my '04. 5 2500 4x4. Just looking for some feedback on which tires seem to be lasting longest in a towing application. I am running the stock factory tire now, with 40,000mi. towing a 10,000lb. rig almost every day. I run on mostly pavement; 70%, with 30% or so on gravel roads.



Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Probably lots of opinions here, but I finally got away from the Goodyear tires and went with the Michelin LTX M/S. Very smooth highway tire and I will never go back to Goodyear. I tow about 7K lbs and just love them.

Just be sure it is a load range "E" you need those extra plys in the sidewalls so they don't balloon on you.

I don't think you can find Michelin in 17". I would love to have the LTX on mine if I could.

But BFG is Michelin's brand as well, so you may be doing as well with the OEM tires as anything else out there. 40k towing is not bad.

Go to www.michelinman.com and you will find the specs for LTX M/S in 17". Don't go with the A/S as they don't do a good job on wet roads, they don't have the sides slots to get rid of the water very good.

Damar is right. I have the LTX a/s on mine came with the truck , crappy in the mud and on slick roads.

Unless something has changed, the LTX MX is not available in E range in 17", only the LTX AS.

SAM's CLUB now offers 17" Michelins. I didn't pay attention to whether their tires are LTX MS or AS, whichever it is will be installed on my truck as soon as the OEM Generals give up which I expect will be around 60-70k miles. I don't know yet about Michelins in 17" size but I have experienced over 100k miles of trouble free service from 16" Michelins in primarily towing highway service on my '01 Ram.

How are you guys getting that kind of mileage? I have 23k on my stock BFG's and they are about shot. Must be dirt roads? Didn't meen to steal the thread I'm just amazed.

My neighbors 05 dually has the rwl Generals with 90k on them. He started pricing tires and found them(same factory General)to be the BEST price of all. He is going back with same tire. I understand why. Never needed to balance,90k and JUST now near,on the wear bars and price. He pulls about 8k 90% of miles on truck.

Mine came with them from the factory so you should be able to buy them anywhere.



I put Michelin XPS RIBs on my class C motor home and it's a great tire as well, and that things LOADS it's tires much more than the truck.

I think they are softer tires, both of my Jeeps have them and I started taking one set off and using the factory Goodyears on the road because of the tread wear. That was about 30K. And the Jeep weighs 1/2 a much. They do grip well off road and I think more grip = more wear.

Unfortunately the LTX M/S -which I would love to have- is only available in P-metric. P265/70R17 113S. Not what I would ever put on this truck.



The only Michelin product in LT265/70R17 is the LTX A/S, according to the Michelin web site.



If the site is wrong and you can really buy the M/S in an E rated tire, somebody tell us where! I want some!

I have the pirelli's (the highway tread) in a 265... have about 30k on them now... should get around 75k out of them (at least)... they are excellent in rain, pretty good in snow (for what they are, very predictable), no/low noise, smooth ride, and balanced well.



They are the Pirelli Scorpion STRa's... they are as good or better than the michelin MTX/AS I had on my 99. I currently have a 2k slide in camper on the truck and 50psi of air in the tires... they carry it just fine with very little bulge or roll.

I wore out two sets of BFGs by 63,000 miles and I take care of my truck, drive the speed limit, no digging out. My mileage (average 20 mpg) attests to how I drive and both sets were gone after 32K.

I have two set of the OEM BFG "rugged trails" sitting at home with 50% tread... one has 45k (my 245s), the other has around 55k (a set of 265s). These miles were accumulated on two different trucks, mine and my dad's... he ran the one set, I ran the other...



Other than the BFGs suck in every condition but sitting still, they seem to wear good.

On the other side of the coin, a buddy of mine had his Generals dry rot on the rim in under two years with over 50% tread left. They were also hard to keep balanced. He was running the on a silverado (OEM tire).
