Hi, what are you that have 2WD 3/4 or Ton pickups running for front and rear boots? I'm considering buying tires by the truckload since I need them so frequently. Not getting what I would call good service life out of what I've been using. Goodrich Commercial T/A steers and Same All Terrain for drives. Have tried other brands and not had much better luck. Steers are starting to cup with only 10k on them. Tried different inflations, couldn't see any difference, but not very scientific, just SOPs. Anybody getting anywhere near 40 to 50k out of their rubber? If so, whatcha usin? Imagine 4WD experience would be apples & oranges cept maybe the drives would be pertinent. I've had dam near the whole front end replaced trying to fix this problem.

my truck came with goodyears ,ran them for 65000k, replaced with michlins. ran first set 75000k. now on second set of michlins . have about25000k on them look like new. havent bothered to rotate these yet. wearing evenly so far.
 
I've got Discount Tire house brand E-range all terrains. I run empty 99. 9% of the time. I've got over 35k miles on them, and they look to have about 40% tread left on them. no abnormal wear. been rotated once about 10k ago.

My best friend got 50k out of his last set of Toyo M-55's on a 92 model 250, 4x4. That's about 40k towing goosenecks and 10k empty. They wear good but wet/icy traction is less than spectacular.

I like the Big O brand Dual Groove. It has a higher tread wear rating even than the Michelin's do. And, they have impressive wet/ice traction for an all purpose tire. Just put some on my steering tires. Love the handling. So much better than what was on there before.



Down side? Ride a tad bit harder, but I'm used to it now. Running 65# front and 55# rear duals when empty.



2nd downside is 235-R16 is the biggest they make.

I have almost 80k on my Michelin XPS Ribs. These are mostly towing miles including an Alaska trip with about 200 miles of dirt and gravel stretches. The tires are nearing the end of their usuable service life. Probably good enough for another 10 to 15k but wouldn't offer much traction on mud or snow. Michelin XPS Ribs are about $145/ea from SAM's Club. Oddly, I experienced an incredibly high number of screw and nail punctures in 68k mile with the OEM Goodyears. I have not had even one nail or screw puncture on the Michelins. The harder rubber compound must discourage nails from flipping up to puncture the tread surface.



Michelin (SAM's Clubs) also offer an off-road or all-terrain tread using the same steel-belted carcass as the XPS Ribs if you require a more aggressive tread on your drive wheels. I don't know if they wear as well as the Ribs.

The 19. 5's are an excellent candidate for long life but the price tag is in a whole diffrent league.

You might want to search the TDR for "centramatic". Other people are using these and they might be worth a look: www.centramatic.com

Cost is about $200 for a set of four. If you go to their website, they've got some interesting video of how they work.

I haven't tried them myself, but I know people have had long life with the Michelin XPS Rib. This is a truly commercial tire and is stronger than anything else I know of in a 16" tire. Do yourself a favour and check them out.

I've also had good luck with the Big O dual groove, but I don't think its in the same league as the XPS Rib.

Very True, most who invest in the cost of the wheels and then the tires will never regain their investsment.



I have been running the BFG commercial highway 235/85 on my Dually since I got it. They make the same tire in other sizes and it has been a good tire so far, 25K miles on them. They ride fairly nice so long as you don't keep them aired up high when running empty. Got them foir about $95 a piece.

between my two Duallys I have been through 4 sets of XPS tractions. . and HIGHLY recommend them. . I will always use them



stock LTX Michelins last me around 25K and XPS tractions I usually take off at 60K do to tread depth and winter snow issue. . they then become trailer tires for my G/N [new to me, so now have a use for the take offs that have miles left in them]. .

BTW I drive my Dually like a slot car in the mountains and grind them off not wear them out :D

compair the prices mounted and ballanced out the door. . big difference in totals, also if they have road hazzard included or at extra price again added $

I buy mine at Costco. . usually have to special order as they don't stock the tractions. . but they are usually there in a week

never had a flat in now 5 sets [5th on truck now]
 
I've got 40 k on my set. They are right at the replacement point though. I have rotated them twice and they seem to have done ok. Inflation pressures were 80 rear and 60 front. I hotshot and pull a 40' trailer all the time so I keep the rear pressures up. The wear is even and what I would consider normal.

I had Michelins on my 98. 5 and had close to 100k on them when I sold it and they were still good. Ran into a guy with Michelin 19. 5's on a 01 down in Fort Pierce Fl last week and he had 140k on them and they still looked like they had 50% left.

Anyone have a comment about running stock wheel covers and tire wear? I mean are the covers well balanced or not? My 3500 4x4 cups tires no matter what I do. I think next time I need rubber, I may clean the stock rims up and run without the covers just to see.
 
I am running my 1st set of XPS tractions, so far they are wearing well. I have tried every brand under the sun and these seem to be the best so far. I was told its the steel case design that makes them wear so well the standard carcase creates too much heat and this is why they wear so fast. We tow heavy all the time so its nice to finally find a good wearing tread. My only worry is when i order my new '05 what will i do. As of right now Mich. doesn't make them in 17" sizes.

My truck eats them about every 35,000 on the front, I dont rotate because I rather buy 2 tires than 6 at a time. The rear last about 65,000. Front end started wearing at 5,000 miles new and I have it check... with in specs... I then a t 45,000 was fed up with it and had front end repalced at DODGE, including front control arms upper and lower... . still wheres the tires the same... But after researching I think I found out what causes it. Around here the trucks with a open rear does not wear the tires like the truck with a limited slip. My Dually pushes the front tires in corners and that cups the tires... Does the same on my friends dually with a limited slip... My other buddy that has a dually with a open rear his tires where very even... SO I BELIEVE I FOUND THE PROBLEM! Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.
