Yea they are still put on OEM by special order. A guy in Auburn, WA was decapitated by the one he put together for a brand new big truck last week. He put the ring on backwards, got it out of the cage and then it blew apart. It was on a German brand wheel I can't remember the name of.

Years ago in my Army days, a buddy of mine had to air up a tire on a split rim from a 5-ton truck (I have no clue what the wheel make was). He put it in the motor pool cage and started airing it up - when it blew apart it bent the cage pretty nicely and about gave us all heart attacks. He had to go back to the barracks to change his shorts.

I remember when just a kid dad had a 70 Chevy K20 4x4 and it seemed to need new 7. 50 16's every fall for mud and then for snow plowing.



A little Amoco station in our home town in WY (now a Sinclair) had the metal ceiling tiles. Above the tire changer was a tile that had a round hole through it. Fortunately the tire tech had clamped on the air chuck and walked away. .



They bought a cage the next week, but left the tile as a reminder.



Of course everyone else mentioned everything he did wrong!

A local Goodyear Truck/Farm tire center lost a mechanic two years ago. Even though he was experienced and had done it a thousand times... something went wrong and the thing blew apart crushing his head and chest. The rescue squad was disregarded from the run by the ambulance who had already made the scene. They said that death was obvious and made the call for the coroner. I've seen these guys work with some serious injuries including gunshots to the head... but when they say something like that I knew it was bad.



For that reason I wont touch one. I like Budd style wheels. I was adding some air to the fire engine tires this weekend... 120 lbs... and kept sitting there by this 12R22. 5 tire thinking I was glad we speced Alcoa's on this one.
