Tires--Opinion

I've had good luck with Michelins, currently I've got over 72,000 on a set of 265LTx75-16's and still have a minimum of 6/32 tread left on the thinest skin. Previously I ran original Goodyear Wrangler RTS 245LT75-16's 58,000. They were slicks at change out.

My next set of 285's will definitely be Walmarts. The stock Michelins 265's were total junk, no traction whatsoever, barely got 25,000 miles out of em. Running BF Goodrich AT 285's now and I'll be very lucky to get 30,000 out of them. The combination of our highway surfacing, curvy roads I drive, just werars out tires I guess so why spend $800. on tires when I can get the Wallworld version for $400. ??

I also highly recommend the Michelin LTX A/T. First set got me 60000 miles, still have the second set on, but they are getting near retirement @ 82500 miles, for a total of 142500. No, these are not all highway miles. About 40% highway and 60% rocks, ruts, cactus, mesquite, and a hasty retreat from buffalo every once in awhile. Yes, buffalo still roam in Texas.

IMO that the Michelin LTX A/T are junk to only last 25K.

I'm currently using Coopers by Discount & these too are junk.

According to my latest calculations these will NOT even last 25K but at least they offered me a 60K mileage warranty to cut my costs.

My original Michelin 265-75-16 a/s went 89k. I only tow a 3500# trailer and drive fairly conservatively. I just replaced them with the same.

Tires

Mike, rotating them on a regular basis and monitor the pressure in them will go a long ways. BTW my stock 265 went 30K BUT I might have done a few burn outs.

In case anyone was wondering:

1) Rotated tires like clockwork.

2) Air pressure monitored.

3) Wear has always been even etc...

Basically, IMO a 16" wheel does not belong on a 8800 GVW vehicle. My driving consists of ZERO hwy miles with a few thousand LBs of tools in the back travelling on country roads. I no longer expect to reach 25K on ANY tire. Lets just call it a Dodge design defect.

You are not the only one that got very poor mileage from your Michelin LTX 265/75/16E's . That is what came on my truck and they only lasted 27000 miles. I was very unhappy with them. They was rotated every 5000 and I watched my air pressure. After the first set I will never buy a set of them again. I am running Bridgestones now and they are a little bit better.

Michelin LTX 265/75/16E's

I don't understand this one... . I have 42,000 miles on my factory Michelin's and they look like a little less than half the tread is left.

I'm no grandpa behind the wheel either?

I rotate at 5K check air at least once a month and have a couple (that is "only 2"... I had to try it) burnouts under my belt (post DTT install)

I have a second set of factory rims and I'm shopping for tires. These Michelin's aren't great in the snow. but I plan to keep em and finish them off in the spring.

Most of my mileage is Highway speeds unloaded at 75MPH... or there about:rolleyes:

Has anyone used goodyear at/s I put some on 3 days ago, they are the worst riding and handling tire I HAVE EVER HAD, I had them checked on a run out machine and they were all out of round, Luckly the tire rack took them back , I am back with the Michelins.

If you want to stay with the 16" rims and do not need the M/S rating, I would change over from an LT (light truck) to a C (commercial) tire. The only C tires in 16" are highway ribs. These will start out at LRF (load range F). They will ride rougher when unloaded but will give you longer wear and more load margin.

I could not find any in that size with a M/S rating so I had to move up to Ricksons 19. 5".

The of the nice things about the C tires is that they are steel belted up the side walls. Which accounts for the roughness in ride. The also do not roll over when you push hard into a corner.

Most are re-grovable which means that the normal tread thickness is greater than an LT's. After that you can retread if you like.

Rotation and inflation are key for getting the most from the tires. On my OEM set I got 75K miles. I figured out from experimentation that the door panel pressures were the best when unloaded. Rotation is best at 5K miles (which is also when I do my oil change too).

18,000 out of stock mich. , and I have 9500 miles on BFG MT in 255 and theres not much left of them. But I'm on gravel 95% of the time and loaded at least half of that and I don't expect to get 50,000 out of them. I never could imagine getting more than 20,000 out of a set. Just my experience I'm sure someone out there can get 50k out of the BFGs but looks like mine won't make it to 12k.

Ok, I am on my third set of tires(includung stock). I am original owner. Truck has 205,000 miles. Truck came with Goodyears. After they wore out (40,000 miles) I went with Cooper SRMII load range E commercial tire. I am still on my second set. Do the math. It is a highway tread not all terrain. Tires still pass N. J. inspection. I intend on putting a new set on before the winter hits.

sipping

Dont let anyone tell you sipping does'nt help. For 21yrs I've kept track of milage on tires on our 28 wheeler. Before sipping we averaged 200k out of drive tires, 225k out of trailer tires. After sipping 225k & 250k. Doing 125k a yr the saveings add up. Do'nt you wish we could get that kind of mileage out of tires on our dodge's:)

Cooper Dominators @ Discount Tire

I had 2 of these put on the rear of my truck and the rear of the truck was real loose, swaying from side to side. This was unloaded, even after I raised air pressure on them to 72 lbs. I took them back after 2 weeks and got Nitto Terragrapplers - sway problem cured. The truck felt like my '62 Corvair with the Dominators. The tread was also 1" narrower on the Dominators, compared to either the Nittos or the Pirelli Scorpion ST's I had. I thought since they were made by Cooper, they would be comparable to the Cooper Discoverers, that people seem happy with - Wrong!
