Buying a trailer - questions

Tires tires tires, I have had tire troubles with my 5th ht wheel ( Goodyears) replaed all of them because they were marginal from the factory. No issues yet with new tires. My son on his current Florida vacation had 3 tire blowouts/failures. We both have kept the tires covered and the pressure checked all the time. Alert to anybody buying a new rv should upograde the tires from whatever the factory uses. My previuos rv went for many years without any issues. I think there is some deterioration in the rv industry as far as tires are concerned. Marginal marginal, cheap cheap. An option to upgrade would be nice. My 2 cents.

You look at all of the 15 in ST trailer tires & they all have a speed raiting of 65 MPH. There in lies the largest problem with these tires outside of they are also junk. Since I no longer drive over 65 & put nitrogen in the tires & keep them inflated at 65 psi I have not had a single tire problen in the last two years, knock on wood. We have made three trips across the US since doing that. Just my 2 cents worth.

My new TOWMAX 10PLY as below... ... ... ... ... ... .

MAX53* ST225/75R15 10 E 6. 0 SBL 10ply 2830lbs@80psi

We ALL know that 16" wheels/tires gives you all the best options what with the Michelin RIBS and Goodyears ????

IF you need/want/must stay with the 15" Wheels, either MAXXIS and now TOWMAX offer 10ply Load Range E ST tires... ... ... .

My 16" Goodyear HTs went 8 years with not a single problem, but now I don't know what to buy

Most who own/pull heavy tandem axle fifth wheel trailers prefer Michelin XPS Ribs in size LT235/85-R16 LRE. The Michelin Rib uses and all steel belted casing that is considerably heavier and stronger than othe brands in similar sizes. Not cheap but tires are a case of you get what you pay for.

I looked at those... ... I need the LT 215/85 size... . they were made in Germany, I'm kind of on a "made in USA" kick...

I also had 3 blowouts in a season with factory tires. When I went to a tire shop for repair he told me that most people in the area were going to 7. 50/16 straight tread with a 14 ply rating and running 105 lbs of air. I went that way and have never had another problem. My old Hitchiker never had a tire problem.

All trailer tires are apparenly made in China Therein lies the problem. I recently made a trip to Florida. On the return I blew 3 tires.

I no longer use trailer tires. I am now using Michelin LT tires. They run at 51 psi as do trailer rated tires of the same rating.

OEM 15" rims were designed and rated for LRD ply tires with 55 psi inflation pressure. Installing LRE tires on OEM rims and inflating the tires to 80 psi is a recipe for a disaster with a failed rim.

I had my last 5th wheel for 14 years. It was a 30' WestPort by Fleetwood. I had blowouts with the 15" tires that came on it and after a few years I changed to 16" tires. I had blowouts with the 16" tires also. I used ST and LT tires, always checked the air pressure. The 15" seemed to have tread problems and the 16" seemed to have sidewall problems. I think the main problem is how much the trailer sits. Now I replace tires at 3 years max. All my blowouts were in the summer crossing the desert.

Pictures below are my new 10PLY Load Range E TOWMAX (225 x 75 x 15")

Rated at 2850# per mounted on 2850# rated wheels inflated to 80 PSI.

This in my conclusion is one of the best ST Tires available. I made the decision to stay with 15" on this 10,000GVW car hauler. It is what it is. I will watch my speed, keep them at 80PSI, cover them when not in use, and elevate the trailer off the tires during the winter. LUCK has nothing to do with it!!!!!!!!

Someone here said something about Denman tires for there RV with 15 in wheels. I am like a lot of people I cannot go to 16 in wheels. They make it in a 15 in E rated tire. This morning I was at the BIG O tire store in Carson City, NV & my friend who works there said that he sells quite a few of the Denmen E rated tires & he has not had to replace a tire because of a defect. He said that Big O stocks them in their warehouses. So if you are interested in Denmam tires for your trailer they can be bought at Big O.

Tire upgrade

My first big upgrade to my 5er was to get 16" wheels and BF Goodrich Commercial T/As in 225 75 R 16. I gained less than an inch in overall diameter, but went from a load range C (garbage original STs) to load range E. Pulls great and was able to do the entire upgrade for around $ 800. 00 and change. Resounding theme: don't skimp on tires.

As far as I'm concerned, tires are the most important component in any trailer followed by brakes and hitch. As soon as I got my new Arctic Fox 5er home, I took it to my neighborhood Discount Tire store and had them replace all 5 ST China tires with LT 235/85R/16, LRE Michelin XPS Rib tires. I won't take any chances with any Chinese ST junk tires.

ST tire are only good for 3 years from the date of manufacture. LT American made tire are good for at least 6 years from date of manufacture. Check the date code box on the tire before you buy.

Although not many tire shops push it, it is also a good idea to have any trailer tire balanced.

Although balancing won't help for an out-of-round tire, it does make them tow easier and smoother. An unbalanced tire slapping the road can't be good...

I have the factory junk STs on my 10k trailer that sits... never had an issue towing highway, but those tires are balanced.

I have been pulling since 94, been 150000 miles with heavy 5th wheels, had 2 broken belts 1 screw, I keep my air 20 lbs under factory, check my tires every time I stop. We are know fulltimers do voluntary work,so I carry lots of tools for contruction work, plus my wife is a packrat

What tires are you using. I don't understand the 20 lbs under.
