has anyone run the toyo mud 35 12. 50 18s? the people at kore have said that they are quiet and long lasting but the nimrod at my local tire shop says they would be the opposet. they are expensive and i dont want to find out the hard way! they look very good in my book and are load E. also i like kore's wheels and understand the tech stuff about them but i want something a little wider than 8. 5 that is on the narrow side for a 35 12. 50. i did find the weld evo velocity 18x9. 5 with a 6. 12 backspace very close to our stock 6. 25 they should stick out less than the 9" wide 5 inch backspace i have now. and they look similar to the cheyenne 8. well i would appreciate any info or comments before i blow 2k (after trading in what i have now) to change them out... ... . thanks... chris

Naturally a mut terrain tire is going to be significantly noisier and faster wearing than, say, a Michelin ATX tire. The only meaningful comparison is between the Toyo and another mud tire. I can honestly say I've never heard a truck with a mud tire of any brand coming down the street thought it was quiet. It's all very subjective... what the guys at Kore think is quiet and long lasting is not likely to be the same as what your nimrod thinks. You might just have to pony up the cash and do it and see!

You mention about the 8. 5 inch wheels being a bit on the small side for a 35x12. 50 tire. Of course, the benefit to a more narrow rim is better bead protection off road. Personally, I'd rather run an 8 or 8. 5 inch rim with a 35x12. 50 tire just to get the protection (better to damage a tire than your wheel).

i cant comment on the rims but as far as tires go heres my take after 3k mi.

ive always had bfg mud t/a, so that is my comparison. they are not any louder than the bfg mud as far as road noise but this will change as thay wear (better or worse? time will tell), they seem to be a little better in the mud, havent driven on snowy roads yet. wear? only have 3k on this set and just had one replaced under warrany for out of round. there was some wear but i didnt think it was bad. i can see getting 30k+ but thats the problem with a new tire, you just dont know.

there was a guy with a duramax on my job w/ 6" lift and 35x13. 5x18 toyo m/t and his tires were close to half gone. i asked how many miles but he just bought the truck used and he didnt know. one big factor is power, if you turn your truck up and always leave stop lights with a heavy foot you can figure on leaving about 10k worth of tire on the aspalt over the life of the tire,

just my $. 02

See, it's very subjective. To my ears, BFG mud terrains are quite loud from outside the vehicle. I've never ridden in a vehicle with them, however, so I can't say if they're so loud inside.

i guess it is in the ear of the beholder so to speak but im not expecting silent tires but not obnoxious either like thoes trucks you can hear coming down the road before you can see them. i have had many sets of bfg a/t's and consider them to be very quiet. i then got the dick cepeck f c 2's and they are much louder than the bfg's not horriable but noticable. but not like super swampers either. as far as wear i could only get around 20k or so out of a set of bfg a/t's (i drive in the middle i dont leave rubber at stop lights but i dont baby it either) so anything more would be great. as we all know good tire choices for our trucks are few and far between at least for the near future. the tire makers cant grasp that just because we have heavy duty trucks we might want a bigger size tire than the little stock ones but still be able to tow with them. i normaly would not even consider a mud tire as i dont go off road much but i like the off road looks and the load range E 65 psi makes me feel better than a D range 50 psi tire i dont tow very heavy but the D range have very flexy side walls for such a heavy truck.

A bit...

I've got the Toyo's on now and they're just a bit louder than the stock BFG's. At this moment, I'm near Cabo San Lucas, and have to say these are some great wheels and tires. I met Kent as he crossed the finish line of the Baja 1000 and later we looked more closely at the tires. They were in great shape, especially after being abused to the worst extreme for 1000+ miles.

I've yet to come across a better tire for my particular situation. I can't vouch for them in the snow or ice, but in the dirt they are great. And on the highway, the noise level is just a bit more than the BFG's. Noticeable at first, but tolerable. I've had 6 sets of BFG's on various vehicles and love them. But I may keep these Toyos on for a while after my trip.

The wheels and tires set me back a bundle, but definitely worth it. I plan on driving to Cabo each year, and at the rate I'm going, they should last me many years. Hope this helps.
