Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew where to find (and the biggest sized) tires for a ' 97 3500 dually with 16" rims? I was looking at BFgoodrich 255/85/16 10-ply E tires, but apparentally they're not available for some reason. The D codes are, but I need the E. Any advice and suggestions would be much appreciated, Thank you.

The 255/85 is basically the widest tire you can put on a dually without a spacer. Sometimes even they'll rub. I have never seen an E rates tire in this size however. They generally have fair weight capacity but only 8 ply.

npieske,

What size were you running, and on what truck/wheel etc?

Also, where do you buy your tires?

I'm thinking about the 285s for my 4. 10 geared 98 dually. They are 33. 2" tall, ver. my stock 29. 3" ht.

TIA, Ray

I have the 235/85 r16 stockers on my truck now. One thing to think about is if you get the wider tires without spacers(which of course, are not recommended by tire shops typically) you will likely have to run them up to max psi to avoid any rubbing.

I have hauled 22,000 lbs with a gooseneck and hay at about 65 psi and did not come close to having any rubbing at all. Load Range E tires have a max psi of 80... . It is a rough riden' sob.

My wheels are the standard 6". It looks like the minimum wheel width for the 285/85 is 7. 5"

Les Schwab is a tire dealer that dominates the Pacific Northwest. That is where I buy all my tires. However, Schwab's wouldn't even consider mounting those tires on factory 6" wheels because it is out of specs, per Toyo's website. Another reason to get wider aftermarker tires... :)

Good Luck!

It is always safer to stay with the original equipped stock size on a dually. Not enough air space between them can cause a blow out.

I'm looking for a taller thinner tire than the 235/85R/16 to put on my 01' dually and not having any luck, Hankook has a 33. 2 in comm'l tire that I have on my trailer in a 7. 50X16 but it's a 14 ply, I'm a little worried about the ride, their standard truck tire is 31. 8, let me know if you find something, I'd go as tall as I can but I don't want width or spacers

What is the width on my 98 dually stock wheels?

I'm with LBARTLETT. Taller/thinner, no spacers=better.

I re-read the size chart on the M-55, and I see the 255/85 is 33. 3" tall, but require a min. 6. 5" width wheel.

With my 4. 10 gears, and the 12V sweet spot at 16-1700 RPMs, I'm looking for as much roll-out as I can get, without going to 19. 5"$ wheels.

TIA for any input on this.

Ray

FYI,

Per Rick$on website, their wheels fit 94-up and 03-up trucks. That being said, you may try obtaining some 17" wheels from an 03-up DRW 3500 and put them on your 94-2002 style DRW, since the older versions are the 16" wheels, you would at least get a little taller tire/ratio without going too wide... everything has the same bolt pattern. Just a thought...

I saw a guy on the side of the road selling 6 17" dually wheels and tires, take-offs off a new Dodge, I needed a spare for my trailer (16") so I didn't buy them, kicked myself in the butt ever since then, I would have put them on my 01'

A buddy of mine just put 255/85R16 BFG m/t km2's on his 99 Ford dually. They were priced great, look great, and they're load range E 10 ply. I really like the size of the 255/85's.

I am pretty picky about what tires I run. I have 285/75/16 Dean SXT tires up front and 255/85/16 BFGoodrich mudders on the rear with just a small spacer that does no affect anything.

I actually really like that Toyo M55 that was mentioned.

I have about 20K miles on my rear BFG's and they are about half tread.

I like the Dean SXT that I am running on the front, even with no balance they still run pretty smooth. I belive Dean makes this tire in a 10 ply 255/85/16. I can't tell you about tread life because my front end eats up tires in no time.

NEVER EVER run GoodYear mtr's they are complete JUNK

Any problem towing your 5er with those small mirrors?

No I think my enclosed is wider than that 5er and I don't really have a problem. I sometimes have to take a left turn off a highway onto my property so I'll give it a little whip to see if there is a car behind me because I won't make the turn with a car behind me so they don't rear end me.

I can see back far enough to change lanes safely. I also have those little fish eye mirrors stuck to my mirrors.

look at Interco TrXus M/T's, they have 33"+ tall tires with a 9" width in a 16" tire, should work on a dually with no problem however they are pretty severe
