Tires

#@$%! I currently have Toyo Open Country MT 295-70-17s and I am only getting about 25k out of them. Any suggestions on tires I can try, I am tired of spending 2k on tires and not getting even 8 months out of them. I am thinking of even going down a size. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

I am using the Michelin M/S tires in stock size. I am some where around 60,000 miles on them with a fair amount of towing. I use them as a summer tire now as I need better tread for winter. I like the Michelins for my purposes as they are a good all around tire. I do use the Centramatic balancers which help extend tire life. I do not have any cupping as well. Your type of driving will also affect tire life. An off road tire will not do well on high speed pavement driving. There are so many variables along with the "right foot" factor.

I agree about the right foot factor, but I cannot use a highway tire, granted most of my miles are highway, but a great amount of roads up hear are dirt and not well maintained and I do get off road occasionally. , You know better to have and not need than to need and not have

I'm looking at the BFG AT KO's. They have a good reputation and, like the good Captain, I do spend some quality time on dirt roads that are excellent to poor. My OEM BFG Rugged Trails lasted almost 45,000 and probably would have gone more if winter wasn't upon me and I trashed one. The Pirelli Scorpion ATR's that I have now won't last 26,000.

I will stick with either the stock 265/70-17's or maybe, MAYBE, move to a 235/80-17. I don't know how that would look or wear on a 3500 Mega that tows about 5000 miles per year.

My OEM BFG Rugged Trails have 65000 on them with about 1/4" tread left. Mostly pavement driving, but with 25000 towing. Will replace with the same.

Rotated at about 10000 miles or once a year.

AMink let me tell you the 295's look reall good, I have a 5'er that I tow to races and to camping 40' 18k+ with toys in it, It tows good to, I might have to look into BFG TA KO's but Im pretty sure they aint cheap.

You're right, the BFG's aren't fiscally palatable. Stock size is anywhere between $220 and $250! I don't want to go bigger. I've done that and in the snow and ice they just don't work as well. Plus the mileage goes down too. I like the tall skinny look.

I had really good luck with the wear on the Rugged Trails too. I've seen really bad reviews for them, but they were fine for me. I do hunt and spend more time than most on dirt roads. Even the good roads cut the tread and then it wears faster on the road. I probably had 5,000 more summer miles on my RT's but it was winter and I trashed one. One new tire with all its tread and 3 worn down ones wasn't acceptable so I got the Pirellis. They just flat out wore out.

In the past I had very good luck with Michelins but they don't offer anything larger than 285"s. I run 315-70-17"s. Last set I gave the Cooper Discover a shot and found that they wore like iron I had just under 65,000 miles on them, but they were skiddish in the rain. I also was getting the best MPG out of the truck with the Coopers. I have Procomps on the truck right now and while they are awesome in snow and rain they are not lasting with only 26,000 miles on them they are over 2/3 worn down. Also I lost an honest 2 MPG and saw almost a 75 degree increase in exaust temp. I've been doing alot or research on tires and wanted to know if anyone has given Hancock a try. The price is not bad at Discount tire direct.

I got the Big O A/T's. Look better than I thought they would. I had them on my 97 and they were good, plus you can't beat the road hazard warranty. If it breaks, you get a new tire. No questions.

I will have to check out the cooper discovers, I myself have not had much luck with procomps either.

My BFG M/T KM 2's are at half tread after 40,000 miles (most on-road and towing about 10,000#) and will keep me going this winter, even with plowing. Paid about $1100. 00 for all four. Will get another set when these are done. Love these tires, they have awesome grip... dry,wet, mud, or snow/ice, and added bonus, low noise. 285/70/R17 size, one down from yours.

Big O Tires - Tire Details

Big O is a mostly western tire store, kind of like Les Schwab. They have their own branded tires made by other manufacturers. I'll have to get some pictures up because it's actually a pretty good looking A/T tire on the truck.

I just had a set of Procomp AT's, stock size installed on mine. They look great new, but after 2000 miles, about half of which was off pavement, they are cut up and missing a lot of chunks from the edges of the tread blocks. No way they will make anywhere near the 50,000 mile treadwear warranty. I plan on going back to where I got them to see if they will do anything about it. They are brand new and look awfull. Very disappointed. Had good luck with Michellin LTX M/S on a previous truck but wanted a bit more aggressive tread.
