Tires

Well guys i finally change tires, at 34,000 they were gone. What a difference i put some kelley springfield 285/75/16 on and found out what i have been missing it handles great, corners great. Those stock tires sidewalls were very weak. The truck should have came with these tires, just cant say enough good things about the night and day difference it made.

Are these on a 4x4??? What load range are they and a ball park price please. Went shopping today for 265/75's for my '00 4x4 and Michelen's are $175. 00 apiece OUCH!!! I am used to buying michelen 235/85's for my old truck at $140 apiece. Did not know the new truck would cost me in more ways than one.

Big Don, the same 235's you are used to will be fine on the new one too. The 285's in with a D rating will in most cases will carry more weight than an E rated 245 or 265. Look at the total weight carrying capacity of the tire, not the weight rating code. By the way, the 236/85 is less than 1/8" shorter than the 265 and 1. 2 inches narrower in a BFG. Hope this helps.

I don't really want 235's on my new truck, I was just comparing prices (thinking out loud). I'd like something bigger than the 265's. Preferably a good 285. A load range D would work and as you say generally offer more payload than the load range e's in the 235's. I understand the 285's will work fine and not rub anywhere??? How much taller are the 285/75's??? How much will it throw off the speedo and are there any corrections I can make to it???

Don, I am running 285's, they do not rub or hit anywhere. If you have the really thick plastic mudflaps you could have a rub at full lock. The 285's are 32. 9 inches tall in a BFG, and the 265's are 31. 9, I figure about a 4% error on the speedo. You would be going 52 actual with a 50 MPH indication. Not enough to worry about really. If that much error bothers you I think the only way to correct it is with an Abbott speedometer correction box, or something lke it. I might as well plug the tires I have, the BFG A/T KO. I have gotten over 50K miles out of them on this truck and still had some life left. I think they would have gone 60K easily. They ride and drive really well, are quiet, and have great traction in all but slush or super sticky mud. They are about $170 each. When these are gone I will buy another set, that will make set 3 on this truck. Hope this helps.

The truck came with Michelens 265/75/16, after about one week i took it back to stealer and complained of poor handling truck,they checked steering box and adjusted box. When i drove it home it was hell trying to keep it straight. I stopped and i adjusted steering box and put it back the way it was. I called them and they said that the michelens were the problem and i would have to take it to a tire dealer. They washed there hands of the problem,i then put Rancho 9000 on and now have a very good heavy sidewall tire and boy i have a new truck. When we took the michelens off i was looking at them and they are very light and the sidewalls are very,very thin. I will not ever put michelens on my trucks again. Just my 2 cents worth. On all my other trucks i have always run cooper tires with good results. But i do like these kellys. D-Rated heavy tread,good load rating,temp,etc, 140. 00 each.
