Do you think you could have fit 305/70/17's on a 17x9 wheel without rubbing?

Yes I Do, but it would be close. I'm running 315's on 17x9's with 5" backspacing with occasional minimal rubbing and I have a 2" leveling kit. The rubbing can be fixed with a heat gun and a soft hammer. With the 9" wheels sticking out from the wheel well it looks "tuff". I Like It. :D

Backspacing is the key!

Dunno' if this'll help, but I just put a set of 315/70/17's on my 2004 3500 (single rear wheel), and they clear (just barely), lock to lock, with no lift at all. The secret behind this is that the factory "chrome clad" steel wheels have a full 6. 25" back spacing. The tires fit the truck perfectly, not sticking out from under the fenders at all.
