Have you asked whoever you bought from if they have the certificate of origon which is what the manufacturer supplies so you can get a title?. Does your state or county offices ever record liens? you might check if you know who the original purchaser was if a lien was recorded at ( here it would be the recorder of deeds office) and get a copy of the papers. they would show who financed it and they may still be holding the certificate in a folder. Several times I had to get all over banks to release titles they held to vehicles that had already been paid off. If carfax doesn't show it , it probably never had a title. You may be able to request with your bill of sale and a statement from a state highway patrol inspection that it was not stolen a lost certificate of origon from chrysler but I wouldn't hold my breath. I I bought a reposessed truck that had a "state assigned" serial number tag on it and title because it had no previous title for some reason.

The "Statement of Origin" is (at least here in WI) given to the DMV in order to obtain a title. Most owners never see it unless they come in the door and want to drive the new car away that day. Then the whole mess gets hand carried through DMV.



If the truck was used off road and never registered, it is probably laying around someplace. Is the person you got it from the original owner? Does he have the folder of paperwork from when he bought the truck?

Going the salvage title route might be harder than you expect. Up here in Iowa, the inspector usually looks at the frame for the VIN, the motor for a VIN, and on various parts of the body for a VIN before issuing a new VIN number tag for the door jamb. Imagine what this inspector is going to say when he sees that they all match. "There is NO PRIOR DAMAGE. Is this truck STOLEN? WHERE did it come from? WHO previously owned this truck?"



You might open a BIGGER can of worms than you have now. Also, TECHNICALLY the TITLE goes with the FRAME of the vehicle according to federal law if I remember correctly. So switching complete frames requires title of the donor frame rig. Bodies have no difference upon title as they get the VIN from the current titled frame.

I also live in Nebraska and can tell you that this is one of the worst states to try and get a title for a vehicle in. I buy and sell alot of salvage vehicles and it's allways a pain to get them taken care of , I have also found that in general if I don't have a title for a vehicle and don't have a donor title I just part them out becouse this wonderfull state makes it impossible to get one. You will either have to have a statement of origin or get a donor title to be able to license your truck. Going the salvage rout they will deffinatelly check all vin number's on the truck and check them to make sure they aren't stolen. We sometimes get a title by putting a shop lean on the vehicle but it has to have been a previously titled vehicle to do so. ??Salvage??

Ok I want to talk about me for a while. . Just what does a salvage title mean? Several years ago I bought a 72 Triumph car, still have it, plan to sell it soon. It has a salvage title. To the best of my knowledge it has never been in an accident. I am supposedly the third owner, I believe I spoke to the original owner by phone. I was told by the guy I bought it from and the oringinal owner that it sat unregistered for about seven years and that is why it became salvaged? It is a Ca. title. Since I do have the title selling should be no problem accept I imagine that may bother some potential buyers, and I am not sure what to tell them. It didnt bother me when I bought it as the car is in excellent condition and titled so what do I care. I ran the vin on some of the car sites but it doesnt come up? Can non registration cause a title to become salvaged? Or was I in a snow storm that day? Any thoughts? Thanks

I'm not at all familliar with Ca. law but here in Ne. for a title to become salvage the vehicle would have had to have been totaled out by the insurance company, meaning that they decided to just pay the value of the car to the owner rather than fix it due to the cost of the repair exceding the cost of replacement reasonably. Quite often if the repair bill looks to be 75% or more than the book value of the car they total it. Which could be for any number of reasons besides body damage, for example depending on your coverage I have seen cars get totaled becouse the owners insurance covered the cost of engine replacement due to water damage in the rain but it was found that the replacement cost was higher than the value of the vehicle. One thing to keep in mind is that the value of a vehicle is droped by a percentage due to the fact that it has a salvage title. Good luck selling your car. Seth

Bhooper... your scenerio happens quite often. In nearly all states, if a vehicle sits unregistered, the only way to license it is to pay the back fees. Some states allow the owner to "salvage" the title and bring it current for the current owner or a new owner and avoid the back penalties (sometimes they are quite expensive). Salvage does not necessarily mean it was wrecked. The rule of thunb I go by is that a salvage vehicle is worth about $2000 less. Providing it has enough base value to do that. Just be totally honest and disclose the title info up front. Buyers appreciate honesty and those who truly are interested will respect you for that.

The first stealer was a bust! I went in asked if they could pull a warrenty work or any kind of work done on my truck. They said that it was against the law for them to give any information other then service work done within the last three years. OK, so I decided that they were not going to help at all. That was after talking to about three other people who all gave me someone else to talk to. RUN AROUND.



I asked my dad about it and he said the other stealer just did the vin information and summary sheet on a HEEP he just bought. So I went there yesterday and got it no problems, just went to the service desk and asked them for a " Vehicle Information Plus Summary Report" gave him my vin number and he said just wait a minute and we will have that for you. About two mins later he handed it to me and that was it. No problems at all!



I found out the owner was a business, I said owner cause I still need to talk to the state to find out if it was titled.



Has anyone, or can anyone tell me how to go about applying or asking about attaining the "Statement of Origin" papers??? I do know the original dealership, etc... from the report.



Just asking ahead of time, i will find out about the title from the state, but I believe it has never been titled.

Such as missing state taxes, or against law to never title? anything possible.

As far as getting the statement of origine it is the origional paperwork that came with the truck from the factory and is what the state uses to title a vehicle. Therefor your going to need to try and talk to the origional purchaser and see if they still have it. They would have recieved it apon purchasing it at which point most people take it down to title the vehicle but assumably they would have kept it in a file or something. The origional dealership probably would not have it but I suppose might still have paperwork to prove it was purchased there and maybe even be able to obtain a duplicate? As far as getting in trouble for back taxes I don't know for sure but I would be Expacting that when trying to get it titled from the statement of origine provided your able to get ahold of it I would expect to have to pay all the sales tax on the origional purchase price of the truck, but i don't think they penalize you anylonger for back liscence fee's so you should be ok there. Just expect to get your check book out to cover the sales tax cuz we all know that can kill ya!! Good luck Seth

Here in Michigan we can request a title after having ownership (possesion) for 7 years.

I have a comment to make about registering salvage vehicles in the state of texas, Having registered many such vehicles in the past there. Someone made a comment about having to pay back fees for the years that the vehicle was not registered. The way to get around this is to sign a non use afidavit, Stating that you haven't driven the car since it was last registered. As for a vehicle having a salvage title this almost always means for some reason the car was totaled by the insurance company. Now bear in mind when i say totaled that could be that as little as the front bumper was damaged, I have seen it happen before. IF the insurance company gets a customer who is fussy they may just cave and total the car, Also my dad bought a car that was in a flood, no apparent damage, didn't even get inside. My dad even drove it home from the salvage lot, but it too has a salvage title. As I was getting out of the salvage businss my dad told me any vehicle that was older than an'89 in the state of texas would be issued a regular title regardless if it was a salvage or not. They also make mistakes in the DMV office, I have seen them register vehicles that where salvage vehicles and give them a regular title, also i have sold some salvage vehicles and the people went to re register the vehicle and they forgot and just gave them a regular title.
