Dodge Towing Guide

I am getting ready to to switch to DTV with the tivo reciever for the home. I have a spare dish for the camper and just planned to unhook the reciever and put it in the camper when going on trips.

Noticed that on the box in the store it says must be hooked to a phone line to recieve the guide and other struff. Is this true or will it still work OK?

NOT necessary on DISH network. . Don't know of Direct, but have several friends that travel in their morothomes with it and don't seem to have a problem...

I have had both services, both without a phone line. worked fine. They want a phone line so they can track you if you get a movie. One of said I MUST have a phone line,I more or less told them to pound sand.

I have two DTV Tivos, one in my fiver and one in my Dodge. I had to connect them to a phone line on initial setup and then moved to my travel units with no problems except a nag ever so ofter but all works well.

I messed around with our Tivo in the camper. It took 5 minutes to boot up before we could watch TV. Since we operate on battery power alot, it was not worth the trouble for me. I have a dedicated non-tivo that we keep in the camper. If you camp with hookups, I guess the 5 minute wait would not be a big deal since you could leave it powered up all the time.

To answer your question, we run our Tivo for about 5 months with no phone line. Got a nasty message every day, but it worked fine.

We have been full timers since last Oct using Tivo, it works without phone line, however we get a message everyday telling us we need to connect to phone line, I just delete them. Without the phone line connected it takes we do not get updates to the system and cannot order movies etc. without calling directtv and that is ok with us, we have explained to directtv serveral times what we are doing and they do not seem to be able to comprehend it so we do not even call them anymore. It seems to work ok this way and when we can we hook up to a phone line and go to the menu and make the tivo call then all is well again for a few days before the messages start appearing again. Remember once you leave your home area you will lose your local channels. Good Luck.

I connected a 400 W inverter to my battery source and the Tivo remains on when I remove the 110 V source. Allows the Tivo to remain on or in standby. Works great, especially when using the generator.

No Phone?

Like others said no phone and it still works. If you turn off the receiver but leave it plugged in you can and will receive the up dates ,they do not come over the phone line ,just over tha air but the receiver must be turned off. And pluged in to a live outlet. The phone line is to track you and to see if you are in that location that the service is that one address stated when service was started. You are supposed to get a permit to use in a RV and you can get the distance major networks ABC NBC CBS LA NY some do some don't . Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY.
