Hey, Fellas. I bought this truck in August from the original owner. He bought it new at age 56 and loved it like his only child. I got a stack of service records as thick as a Bible. All dealership. The truck has around 150K on it. No mechanical, electrical problems whatsoever so far. It's just in phenomenal shape. I swear I haven't posted just to brag:-laf... no, I'd like your all's opinion. I'd like to achieve about 325 HP with this truck. My father in law, who owns five CTD's himself says it's worth more stock and leave it alone. What should I do? I only intend to drive this truck for fun... definately not a work truck and don't plan on selling it anytime soon. What do you think?

I dont thinnk they are worth any more stock than modified. If you want to BOMB it, go right ahead and do so. In some cases, it would be worth more modified if done well and you have gauges to monitor things. You'll hardly get out of it what you have in it, but it will likely run better and more efficiently. I'd give more for a truck with gauges, PDR 190s, a stage 4 turbo upgrade, and a 4" exhaust system- that's stuff I dont have to buy for it.

Leave it stock, unless you plan on pulling, towing or hauling extra heavy loads. I'd only change once it was broken.

But then again if you really want to bomb it and money is not a factor then have at it. But for me personally I would not do any thing to it unless you want to improve on what is allready there or to enhance what you want to use it for.

Bomb the thing!! Since you don't plan on getting rid of it... (just like my '93:-laf), doesn't matter what it is worth. Heck, I turned down 15k for mine a few months back!

go for it, you plan on keeping it then have some fun with it. 160 hp or 330hp, average or awesome, you pick. the hell with plain and stock. be a pioneer put some functional sidepipes on it.

There's nothing wrong with leaving it stock, but there is also nothing wrong with releasing the potential that the 1st gens have. The factory had to limit the power levels because the transmission's couldn't handle it yet, so they dialed down the fuel, used big exhaust housings, and used restrictive exhaust systems.

Making some good, basic power upgrades... and corresponding transmission upgrades... will get your truck up to a really good power and performance level that will give you performance to match todays speed limits and needs which I feel is very good rationalle for making the mods.

I will also say that 300 hp is a LOT of power. I just recently reached 308 crank hp on a dyno and I feel I am where I want to be. The truck now has enough pwoer to pull the loads I want to pull, and it is a lot of fun to drive around town because the parts work very well together and the truck can actually get out of its own way. It gets 20 mpg and is very reliable - no reason why you should hold back. The power is there - might as well have fun with it.

Check out my sig for a list of 'recommend upgrades'.

Mad Max-Reason for my HP goal: My brother in law has a '95 single cab 4X4 5 speed that's been tuned by Jim Jessup. His list of upgrades include an aftermarket air box, turbo and housing, ATS 3-piece manifold, Jim's custom injectors, #6 plate, a 3000 RPM governer kit. Jim also set the timing. We haven't professionally dynoed the truck, but I can tell you it's like driving a four wheel drive Corvette! So, I get behind the wheel of that truck and imediately I look like :D. I get back in my truck and :{. You all understand, I'm sure... I mean... 160 HP? From this engine? Come on! I suppose the modifications are sort of like releasing the perverbial Grizzly from his cage. Well, I guess we all know what's about to happen to this truck... ... :-laf

To Bomb or Not To Bomb

That's a rhetorical question correct?

There is no logical reason to leave it stock. Mild to moderate Bombing will only make it better.

The choice is one only you can make, but if it was mine I would build as much as I could absolutely afford. Can you say fun?:-laf
