Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Leak!

My truck is broke down (truck 911, 'truck needs help') and I think it is the the VP that has gone south unfortunately  (Plenty of fuel pressure, the engine cranks, got compression, grid heater seams to be working.

We just wanted to make sure that we could check the VP by cracking the fuel line at the injector and then crack the engine to see if we get any spurts of fuel.

We don't have a code reader for the code and the truck won't start to get it to auto zone, so until my dad gets it to his mechanic I was just hoping I could narrow it down to the VP or not. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

I'm a long way from an expert on your truck, but on my '01. 5 I can cycle the key on and off three times and it will flash the codes in the odometer area. I remember that the 216 code usually means a bad injection pump.

There is also a way to "hotwire" the VP-44 to see if it works. I remember you unhook the plug from the VP-44 and hook one wire on the pump hot and the other to ground, but I don't remember which terminals are involved.

When the VP-44 is working it will squirt out a pretty good stream of fuel when you crack a line. When it is dead you get bubbles and drops.

I can tell you this basic information because I too was once setting along the road with a dead VP-44. I was fortunate to have a buddy traveling with me who could haul me to safety to make repairs.

I wish you well.
