We have a 99 dodge with the automatic. We took it to the dealer for no overdrive. The dealer tells me that he hooked up the scanner and the trans temp reads -3 and jumps around but never gets above 6 degrees he says the the temp sensor is in the transmission solenoid and the solenoid needs changed. Has any one heard of this problem before. And is there a way to ground it out and check before we buy and try the solenoid?? Thanks for any help... .

Yes, that can happen. If the temp doesn't get over, say 20* (don't recall the real temp it is set for), it won't allow O/D. It is to protect the trans. The sensors aren't to bad to replace. Have to drop the pan to do it.

I just happen to be talking about that with a dodge mechanic today. And he said that overdrive will kick in after 50*. And this guy knows from what I have seen.

Certainly sounds correct to me. I know on these cold mornings, and evenings (south central WI) when I leave the transmission won't kick into OD until I'm a mile or so down the road, has to warm itself up.
