Site Question

Am I the only user here who thinks this site has gotten slower than molasses in winter since we changed to the new look?

I have "pinged" the site to see how fast it has been connecting and the request has timed out all 4 times on 3 different occasions.

I have a dsl line coming in and using the TDR seems more like a dial up connection:mad

Anyone else notice this problem?

I read slow anyways (have to slow down to read the road signs in a school zone sometimes) but no I haven't noticed.

I'm on the network from work on a T1. Its not super fast but its not slow.

You've got other issues. The site seems to be pretty darned responsive here.

If you're losing ICMP packets, try doing a traceroute to see where the bottleneck is.

There have been some server overload problems over the last few days - evenings being the most affected... No, with the recent system hardware upgrades and changing server sites, I don't understand it all either - I would think performance would increase, rather than decrease...

Not a complaint, just an observation - I *do* have a life outside TDR, and other sites are unaffected... ;)

I have noticed that the site seems to be slow, but that only occurs during the busy hours during lunch and late evening.

As with an ICMP echo request (ping), it is common for systems administrators to drop a ping request packet to prevent the "ping of death" from occuring. The BGR or Firewall infront of the TDR webservers drops the packet. Which is why you do not see a responce.

the last point of trace is:

ge-1-atl1-cust1. globalcompass.com [66. 154. 95. 221]

This is probably the service provider for the TDR, and they just deny ICMP request responces.

First, we have not upgraded the hardware recently as the hardware is plenty for our usage. We have had some hardware and software problems which has caused some issues. A few months ago our primary server crashed 3 of the 4 hard drives - which I have never ever seen before. At that point I brought our backup server online (it's backing up the database continuously and the web directories each night). Mysql needs to be tuned for our usage on each server so when there is a server change there is a period of time each time when I tune the parameters based on the usage. When the primary server was repaired the operating system had to be loaded from scratch and I had to set all of the applications back up on it. After that it was running as the slave server. Last week on wednesday night I was doing some database maintenance and rebooted the server. When it rebooted it did not come back online - I am still working on that issue. At that point I switched back to our original primary server which is whadt we are running on now. Therefore I am having to tune Mysql yet again.

Also, I have been chasing a problem that I was having with the other server with a high number of aborted clients which started happening around the same time as the software upgrade. I thought it was a software bug and have been looking for that. Since switching back to this server I've found that the problem went away. It looks like there is a problem in either the network card or the cable from that server to the public network - which we will fix now that I've narrowed it down to that.

Additionally we are getting into our peak usage time of the year which also requires me to tune Mysql to stay up. Until the traffic hits there's no way to know what needs to be tweaked which doesn't happen until evening. Then I need to wait until a slower time so that I can make the changes and reboot Mysql without kicking everybody off of the site (hence why I am up at 2am right now). These things explain some of the slow performance issues recently.

BTW, I have firewalled out pings to the server as rkressg suggested above. We have regular hack attempts on the site because of the volume of traffic we get and our high rankings on the search engines. Stopping ping traffic blocks one of their avenues for shutting down the site.

When the traffic levels get high enough then rather than having a master/slave server arrangement with one just being the backup I will split the database serving and webpage serving between the two of them. We haven't hit that point yet. This evening our server load did hit 1. 99 once (2. 0 is fully loaded) but that was only for one 5 minute period and was well below that most of the night.

Now, what we have seen is that PC issues with Javascript can cause very slow performance for individuals because this new version of vBulletin uses a lot of Javascript to operate. What internet security software are you running? Many internet security packages filter Javascript which can cause it to run very slowly. Look around in any packages that you are running and see if you can find any mention of Javascript and try disabling that security measure temporarily to see if it improves. If it does most of them will allow you to turn features off for specific sites. Also, older versions of Java can cause slowdowns - try updating your Java package and see if that improves thing. Lastly John - K5AWO found that a driver on his system was causing his slowdowns, check out this thread - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112231 - and see if that applies to you.

I'm on the site at least 6-8 hours a day every day and usually am online during the busiest time periods and I rarely have to wait more than 10 seconds for a page to load and 98% of the time they load in 2-3 seconds. I'm on a 768k dsl connection.

Steve,

First of all, thanks again for all the work you devote to this site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Internet security software... ... ..... I use Norton antivirus which checks email as well as normal pc operations. Does that qualify as internet security software? I too have noticed a marked slow down on this site which seems to match time wise, with the latest software upgrade. You may have something there with the Java thing.

Steve,

Thanks for the feedback. I will check into the javascript thing and my security settings. I am not having this problem on any other site but TDR... . DTR loads and responds lightning quick as do alot of other heavily trafficed (sp?) sites.

Yeah... I also have a life outside of TDR, but I do frequent the site as I have garnered invaluable information as well as help from the great people here.

I loaded this page from my email link and it took almost 2 full minutes to fully load???

Something ain't right!

I can say that this site is running slower. It does not matter where I am , or what environment I am running.

This page still took over 30 sec to load, and I will guarentee that the slowest point between here and there is the ISP connection for the TDR.

BTW, I am running Sun OS 5. 9, running on a 64 bit sparc with 2gig memory on a SunBlade 2500. My internet conneciton from this building is a 1gbps connection 2 blocks over to the Pittsburgh Super Computer Center at CMU.

For a browser, I am running Mozilla 1. 4 for Sun Java™ Desktop System

(Solaris Operating System Edition)

Mozilla/5. 0 (X11; U; SunOS sun4u; en-US; rv:1. 4) Gecko/20040414

I can say this site does run better using Mozilla Firefix on Windows then IE 6. But that is from home, and it still takes more time than it use to.

I am still impressed with how responsive the site is for how many daily requests are served. Steve, you and your crew do an excelent job at mantaning and keeping this site up and running.

-Rich

P. S. For those running Windows and useing Internet Explorer, make sure that you are running some type of Ad-Removal software, such as Lavasoft or Spybots. If your computer has excessive junk on it, it can drastically slow down peformance.

Rich,

I am running AdAware and SpyBot... . I will have my IT person check all of the items Steve and you have mentioned... . just don't recall it ever being this slow before the "upgrade"

Dave

my internet connection is extremely unstable. i'll be connecting at like 500kbps at one moment, then i'll be connected at like 15kbps the next :(:(:( cable internet blows

If this site would run like my truck I would be one happy camper:D

Bob, There was just an article here in the local paper about Mozilla... . I may have to check into this some more.

WELL, like I said, my comments were intended as an observation rather than complaint - and THIS comment:

"I *do* have a life outside TDR,"

Was supposed to go with THIS one:

" and other sites are unaffected... ;)"

... as an indicator that for whatever reason, the current and other recent erratic operation of THIS site, hiccups and burps are NOT observed on any of the other sites I habitually cruise - and some of them also experience pretty high workloads. Dunno if it's the current software or what - and it's NOT a big issue as long as it doesn't become a common event, And I hardly think that will be the case if Steve has anything to do with it! ;) :D
