Those starters likely outlast the engine. UPS even had Bosch redesign the infamous VP44 (they still use it) so it wouldn't fail anymore.

Really? If it's true does that mean can the 2nd gen guys buy this redesigned VP-44? This is the first time I've ever heard anyone mention anything like this.

I idle mine 6 hours or more sometimes. I've been on the road for 7-10 days and never shut it down one time ... ... ... ... not for fuel, not for sleep, not for lunch, not for nothin!

I'm sorry, but that is just plain awesome.

Your doing fine and your dealer is an idiot.

Well, that pretty much sums things up.

I did the "control your idle from the cruise control" thing and like it. It's also good for jump starting. On the other hand, the engine ramps up to about 1000rpm on it's own when it needs to. I still don't idle much. It gets an easy drive down a hill, then 35mph to the first stop light. Then 50mph and beyond! I can't just let it idle. I can hear the fuel! Maybe cause it doesn't sound like a diesel... . :-laf
