TO straight pipe or NOT TO??

I can't decide if I want to straight pipe my truck or NOT? Some people say it is noisy and sounds like POO POO.

Others Love it!!

I don't mind it being Loud when I am ON IT. BUT when I am cruising at 75mph I am right in the dreaded 2000 RPM range. Would that be a problem?

Also, Would I hear it in the cab as DRASTICALLY Louder?

What would be a good muffler I can find locally if I decide not to straight pipe it? Does the sound vary between auto's and sticks?

I also can't decide if I want to go straight pipe or not. I had a walker muffler on my truck with the single and it sounded good. But since adding the twins the muffler doesn't have near the sound that it did with the single. I may try straight piping and then if I don't like it put the walker muffler back on.

I have heard one or two straight piped and they didn't sound quite right. Enough that I decided not to do it. Then I heard one that was straight piped, but not with pipe, the guy used flex pipe instead of solid. Now that one sounded great. The harmonics are different with the flex, though it wears out, rusts out quick, about a year, but it's cheap and sounds great. I was going to do that to mine, but found a great deal on a set of duals, so I went that route instead. I went to all the dealers in town, trying to find a piece of flex pipe, but they were all out, so I skipped on the straight piping. The next day, I found the duals, so that ended that. Go for the flex. Two clamps and the hose, is all you need. It will sound great.

I just got mine straight piped this weekend. It sounds real good at idle and when you first get on it. It is pretty loud in the cab when you lug it. Cruising anywhere from 60 - 75 it is not bad at all. Louder than stock, but not to bad. When hard on the gas you can really here it in the cab. The cat also came off of mine. I see you have a 03 so that would not be an issue. I gained about 1 mile per gal. better. Power seems to be better, but it could just be the sound.

I have 4" straight and love it. It does get just a tuch load when you are really moving. But with the quad cab its not bad unless your in the back seat so iv been told.

5" straight pipe on my little single cab truck...



2000rpm is nothing... mine always resonated the worst at 2500rpm



welded all the pipe connections, added a couple stiff hangers, and laid down some sound deadener in the cab, and it's quieter now with straight pipe than it was with a 27" long muffler when the system was clamped and I had no sound deadener!



I LOVE IT!!!



I'll never run a muffler on a turbo diesel again.

Just something to be aware of. The guys that have stacks or other than stock exhaust with straight pipes will sound different than the stocker straight piped.

I cobbled up a single 5" stack on the outside of the body, no muffler for about 3 weeks but the droan was bad from 2000 -2250 rpm. and it was a bit loud when going through the neighborhood. I installed a donaldson 27" with the center baffle knocked out. No more droan and still a good throaty sound. PM me if you have any questions on this setup. Ray

I've got 5" straight pipe on mine. I love it! I think it sounds really good till you load it down and put 10k behind it for a couple hours! But think I have the cheapest and eazyest fix. I bought some earplugs for 50 cents. Problem solved. Now I have the best of both world's.

I rode in one straight piped recently and the noise in the cab was way too loud for me.

The CUmmins by FAR has the best straight pipe sound so if you are going to straight pipe one... do the Dodge.



Mine is and I love it. Highway speeds its not even loud but under load it can get loud. All I can say is when I'm in the vicinity, I draw attention and usually it's smiles and "WOW". From out side it sounds loud and really cool. From in the cab it's great except when you really lay into it it's nuts. But I don't drive like that all the time so it's no biggy... out of my way... . first you get my abnoxious pipe... then if you make a face you get the train horn :-laf



Diesels are meant to be straight piped.
