Bad Ugly

Tragedies like that make the lead story at 6:00. That's a darn shame. Years ago before I got mine I knew a fella with a '91 that pulled race horses up and down the east coast that lost an exhaust valve on #4 or #5 but the caught it soon enough that the head and the cylinder could be salvaged. What a shame. :(
 
Worse yet, is the owner's take on the whole thing. His aunt's son's sister's husband's good friend's cousin (just an estimate, of course) owns a junkyard and there's a B engine that's been sitting there for a couple years. He's getting that one and wants it to be shoved in sans any costly diagnostic examination and just "make it work". Something tells me this project is gonna get much more interesting. I haven't seen the motor yet, but am picturing a mud covered mess that is lucky to even work, not to mention nobody knows how many miles are on it. I'm not complaining though, as this job has now taken a "charge by the hour" basis, no guarantees. As a car/truck fanatic, I look at the heaps that I drive past here and there and wonder at what point in time the vehicle went from being someone's pride and joy when it was brand new to being a heap. Now, I would guess that somewhere in time, something along these lines must be factored in. Like I said, this is gonna get very interesting.
 
I would venture a guess that the maintenance of the engine that blew was less than good given the fact that it is filthy in the pictures. Odds of it being treated decently are remote, so in with the junkyard relic. This is one of those cases where the owner is going to get what he pays for, I hope it works out OK as the shop that was required to do less than the best is often blamed when there is a problem rather than the owner admitting fault.
 
The owner also had the same engine oil in the engine for about 30,000 miles. It came out as thick as molasses and black as coal. The pan is full of sludge. This is the owner's choice, as it was to bring his truck to be worked on at some gas station to begin with. That's when the initial problem began. He was told what options he had doing it the right way, and instead, chose to do it his way.
 
Scott - what is that return hole/opening to the front of and between #2 and #1 cylinder in the exhaust side - is that oil return to the engine, or coolent? I have a VERY small amount of oil seepage in that area that collects on the flat surface of the pad next to it, which is directly under the exhaust manifold from #2 cylinder when the engine is assembled - it looks as tho' THAT engine might have had the same seepage/leak, and I've not been able to figure where mine comes from, or whether is is a fairly common leak in older Cummins engines like mine. It's quite small and harmless for the moment, but not knowing what the source is, it MIGHT become a more serious problem later?:confused: :eek: :--)
 
The head gaskets on the early engines went through many changes, as leaks like that one were very common in the early days. Even now, the same gasket has been updated a couple times. On the 1st gen trucks the gasket replacement is very very easy. Might be worth you while to do it over the course of a weekend.

Unfortunately this is the type of person who badmouths the Cummins adamately. "It has to be junk, look what happened to mine! Bla-Bla-Bla!".

If this guys is going to bad mouth the Cummins, then he needs an azz whooping.
