First attempt to post a picture.

Is this normal on the intake side of the turbo? Looks like casting flash and poor QC to me. What to do, what to do. #ad

edit: Well, the image didn't come up but the link seems to work.

Yes on both. Changed the original filter at about 15k and it was wasted with no movement of the minder to indicate it was bad. I have about 22. 5k on it now. I'm taking it in for all the recalls and little warranty fixes in the next few weeks(now days?).

I noticed that the impeller was dirtier than I would have liked 4 or 5 months ago and saw some of these defects, but they were not this pronounced. It appears to be mostly grunge, not oil. There was a thread a while back about not cleaning the impeller, so I had hoped it would clean up it's own act. I just want to know if it is unstable or just bad QC by Holeset/Cummins. I think that the dealer should replace it when I take it in, but don't want it to grenade before I get there.

Has anyone else seen this before?

The intake tube has looked pretty clean every time I've had it apart. As I mentioned before, the original filter was in real bad shape when I changed it out, but I looked at the impeller a few months before the original filter was changed(the filter didn't look that bad at that time) and noticed this issue to a lesser extent. You can not rely on the filter minder or recommended service interval to be correct for the changeouts. I'm planning on going to a PG7 Intake before the next filter change since at this rate, I can pay for the new intake system in 100K miles, and have equivalent/better efficiency. The original filter had a 98% efficiency rating written on the side. The Mopar replacement from Geno's has the polyester? prefilter and is rated about 99%.

Mine looks similar, just not as bad. The cause was that I got a bit carried away on the oiling of the air filter. Bigger hammer syndrome - figured the more oil the better. Was told that it would harm the turbo by a dodge mechanic.

The problem is that I'm still running a stock setup at this time. I want to get this remedied before I go with the AFE PG7 intake to lessen future hassels.

I'm glad this post came up. About a month ago I installed an aFe Magnum Force intake with Proguard7 filter and filter sock. Then this past week I installed the afe Torque Tube. While I was installing the T-Tube I ran my finger around the inside of the turbo and it came out dirty. At first I guessed the aFe was the culprit but the filter only has about 500 miles of use on it. I then began to wonder if the factory air box or filter was the guilty.

Anyway, after reading the above I feel safe that the aFe Pro7 was not the cause but I will still check the turbo after 5,000 miles of use just to verify.

The kicker is DC say's that we should not use these "aftermarket" filters because they do not filter well. Maybe they should check their own design.

Also, FWIW my stock air box and piping appeared to be be assembled properly and everything was tight. Furthermore, the stock paper filter had under 5,000 miles on it and did not appear to be abnormally dirty like others have noticed.

Your above comment (and turbo pic) scared the hell out of me. My filter minder hasn't budged either, and I had been wondering if the new minder was too stiff. So despite checking the filter at 10K I zipped outside and checked it today (~17K). Other than being a kind of dusty looking grey it appeared to be in fine shape. I didn't see any solid material on it at all and no sign that the filter is about to be sucked into the turbo. I'm also used to changing the air filter with every oil change so this "change it when the filter minder says to" business is going to take some getting used to. My original air filter will make it to 30K at this rate, and that just seems blasphemous to me. But hey, I gots a shiny factory warranty with an extended warranty chaser...

Crunch,

My filter only had about 4,500 miles on it and it looked fine. However, the turbo had a fine film of dirt on it.

AFE

I also run the AFE set-up, I noticed the ring on turbo inlet also a little dirty, blades were also dirty. I was wondering also if the AFE was to blame but just assumed that the oil used for the filter was getting sucked into the system over time. But... . it also tells me that there is dirt getting past the filter. I only have approx 5,000 miles on the AFE so... ... . after looking in the tube and finding no dirt and the clamps were tight... ... has to be the filter.

I understand that your filter is of stock but goes to show we all have to keep an eye on this.
