Today I loaded slide-in and snogo trailer. Idled short distance from house to stop sign. Stopped and barely touched the trottle pedal to start out and BAM ENGINE WENT TO WOT 3200rpms. Truck was in 4 High on hard packed snow. Instanly spun all 4 tires. I stood on the brakes-kicked in to neutral and shut it down. Very fast as I happen to be paying attention at the moment. I think the APPS is bad and DC will change under warranty. Tried a quick restart same thing. Jack in Alaska had a simalar thing happen but I,ll let him tell you the story. His advice when I called him was to let it cool down and try again which would not take to long at 5 below zero. Well the 16 year old with me said lets disconnect the battery terminals as that is what I do on the computer when all else fails. So we powered down (disconnected the negative terminals). When we did the throttle unstuck as soon as I took off the last negative terminal. We had the APPS black cover off and could hear then see it happen. Drove fine then. I tried my cruise control and fast idle but they work fine before and after. I WOULD LIKE TO REPEAT THIS WARNING YOUR TRUCK CAN GO WOT AT ANY TIME SO BE READY

I have a Blazer that will surge to high rpm and then just as quickly shut down. It does it only when cold, and not very often. Anyway, what is the APPS?

Thanks TurboTerry, thats something we all have to be aware of. JWhitcomb the APPS is baisicly the throttle position sensor. John

TurboTerry-Keep Us Advised !

This is my worst nightmare. I am seriously considering one of those Emergency Shutoff Systems. Don't know much about them though.

Driving by (or parking in) a gas station can be just as hair raising, except that the 3,500RPM govener doesn't apply when sucking in raw gasoline vapors. (Dump the clutch and hit the brakes,, or get a fire extinguisher)

Run away engine!!!!!!!

As coincidences go I ran into Turbo Terry at a TDR gathering in Wasilla today.

We discussed his experience and it was exactly the same thing mine did last winter. I posted the problem but no one seemed too interested including DC when I called the 800 number.

Well let me (and Terry ) tell you that you become VERY interested in it when it happens.

His is an automatic 99 and mine is a 5 spd. 98. 5. The APPS is the culprit. The dealer replaced mine under warranty and all has been well for the last 10k miles. Terry will get his replaced on Monday.

I recommend that you think now about how you would deal with the problem if it happens to you so that you will be ready.

Turning off the ignition is the immediate solution. Beware of the loss of power brakes and steering.

Hope this keeps someone out of trouble

Jack-Will That Kill The Engine ?

I guess I am confused. (again) I have read somewhere about these engines running away and turning the key off does not stop them. This has me worried. I will check all the old threads.

It depends upon the cause of the runaway. If the TPS is telling the computer that it is supposed to be WOT turning off the ignition will shut down the engine. If the engine is suck gas fumes or oil through the intake then the ignition switch is useless. I haven't seen the TPS go out on the Cummins yet, but, I have experienced it a number of times with the Detroit Diesel 8. 2. It is quite a ride at first.

the TPS on a 12v is different than the 24v , the 12v has mechnical linkage to it , the only way for it to go WOT stuck would be if the mechnical linkage go pulled to WOT by either it getting stuck their while you had your foot in it or the cruise failing and pulling it there .

the 24v pump is basicly a fly by wire pump , there is no mechnical linkage , its all done by electronics , which is kinda scary ...

Thanks Jack You are right. When it happens to YOU then it does make a big difference. I find it really hard to believe this has happen to only TWO trucks in all the 50 United States and both are in Alaska?must be the BAD fuel we get OR? HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE DODGE and CUMMINS need to know about this.

I believe Jack has a Practical Solutions high idle and I have a Diesel Dynamics. Although they obtain the same results I believe them to be very different in the way they are set-up? The DD works off the cruise control. Does anybody know how the PS works? If there is any thing thesame in them it could be the problem. But no one else is having this problem are they?

Did the pedal stick down also?? Reason I ask is if you could see the throttle go back I would say the cruise caused it. Otherwise there is nothing to see move on the TPS sensor. I am not positive on that but I am kinda sure lol :p

Jack in Alaska did not have his PS high idler at the time of his problem.

The PS idler plugs into the APPS and sends voltage to the ECM letting it run the engine up to X rpm. Once you turn it off it is off.

Pedal went limp and loose. No the linkage on the throttle body beside the APPS was jacked wide open. When it went back the pedal went back. There are 3 cables under the black cover ,but they do not physically connect to the pedal. I think it is a fly by wire. I do not think it is a cruise control issue. Isn,t the cruise the same on the gassers and most other cars. You do not hear it happening to them do you? So out of all the trucks ,two in Alaska are the only one to have went wide open?

WOT

It might be time to consider an emergency kill switch for the ignition. This could give you the desired shutdown without endangering your steering. Just a thought.

Mine Stuck

Started it one cold morning last year and it went to 2000 rpms and stayed there. Could not get it to idle any lower. Didn't think about unhooking the batteries. Dealer replaced the APPS, they seemed to know what was wrong before they looked at the truck.
