MARK - you're thinking of the OLD original Frantz TP filters - they DID use a big wheel/screw down retainer to hold the canister in place - but they haven't use THAT arrangement since the late '50s!

NOR have I experienced ANY oil leakage problems other than a slight "weepage" due to the base gasket getting too hard and compressed after a mere 46 years or so... ;)

BUT, Barry was nice enough to send me a couple of spare gaskets with the new Frantz setup I bought from him, so THAT minor "problem" is history!

Ian - check with Barry - one of the posters further up in this thread - he'll take care of your Frantz questions.

remote fuel filter kits

Barry, Did I understand your post to say you have some fuel filter kits? Do you mean something similar to Prime-Loc kits? let me know. thanks.

Gary,

How often do you change the filter element? Some of the competitive products claim the frequency on the TP filters is a very short interval. When I checked the Frantz site I never saw a specific recommendation.

Thanks,

Don't even think of tossing that TP filter down the drain (besides, they are the consistency of a block of wood after use), Dad used to set them on fire and use them to help burn weeds. I seem to recall the darn things would burn for most of an hour.

OK... so, how often do you change these things?

And, just how clean is or isn't it? I don't think the towel filters would be very good. The towels are not dense and very porous compared to the commercial tp rolls.

Dad had the Frantz on his trucks in the 50s and I changed the TP in them. They kept the oil from turning black(gas engines). I talked to George Walker a lot before he died. George saved the Frantz line from extinction. He also sold Amsoil filters and said the TP did better. He said the best thing is TP rolls with 1. 5" center. Think he said Fort James #17600. I almost bought one, then Oilguard had a sale and I got theirs. I didn't want to have to worry about finding the right TP and they make TP so it breaks down easier these days too. Craig

The bypass filter only adds what it and the lines hold(1qt or so) and the orifice is small and doesn't hurt pressure.

I prefer to change my oil every 5000 miles or so, and at around 2500 miles I change out the TP filter. Since I don't have an immediate plan for the new Frantz filter I recently bought from Barry, I'm using it's canister as my alternate filter - that way I can swap filters in just a couple of minutes, and then actually change the old dirty element when I get time/ambition. ;)

There's really no REASON I'm aware of to change TP rolls at this mileage, it's just so cheap and easy it seems a good thing to do...

HEY Barry, ya wouldn't happen to have some extra Frantz single-roll cannisters laying around would you? I'll eventually install this new filter kit, and lose my "swapper"...

I think I have 3 of the "Fuel Filter" kits left and 1 of the Auto Trans. Kits. I have only 1 or 2 of the small (1 roll) Frantz Kits left and several of the big ones (roll of paper towel or 2 to 3 rolls of TP) George Walker wanted to buy all my inventory and I had some bigger models that he did not have. He wanted to use them for patterns. Neat 'ole guy! Will miss talking to him.

Interesting side note about Frantz filters. There is an Aero Frantz now for sale on Ebay. It appears that these were produced to the standards needed to get FAA approval.

Take a look at Ebay item 1697132434.
