I have read about a mod to the tone ring that is supposed to add MPG or something like that. Can you guys please give me more information on this? Is it worth it to do? I have never heard of this but may consider it if it is worth it. Thanks.

Just another way of advancing the timing. I say go with the rocktech sensor first and then if you still feel like you need the added timing do the tone ring mod. Tom, did you read the post about the Quadzilla updates that would solve some of the issues you are having with yours?

Just completed the mod today (with some advice from Big Bob). Started right up. I'll find out what the gains are going to work tomorrow. I have read that 1/2 tooth is worth approx 3 a degree advance. I'll add more later just to see what happens. Cheaper than a sensor (free) and You can always loosen the 4 bolts and adjust it back if needed.

Did mine a few weeks ago. Definately worth the time. Mileage has gone up a respectable . 5-. 75 mpg and the power differance is unbelieveable.

Results

Ran fine on the 60 mile trip too work this morning. Milage was down according to the trip computer. Top end was a little less it seemed. EGT was the most of 100 degrees cooler at lower speed, about 50 at cruise on the freeway. Otherwise, I saw no improvement in anything really. It was 28 degrees out this morning so that may have alot to do with it. I'll see what it does this afternoon on the way home.

Alot of differant results on this mod. Some have seen as much as 2-3 more mpg, others have seen a decrease. At first, my mileage went up about 1. 5 mpg, but has since came down some. Alot of that may have to do with fuel stations going to their winter blends.

I think some of it has to do with where your trucks tone rig was set at the factory, as there has to be some varience in any production line assembly.

How are you getting the balancer bolts loose?

with an automatic (like mine) take the inspection plate off the bell housing and use a big screw driver on the flex plate teeth to keep the motor from turning.

I did this mod last week. Milege went up 1. 5 mpg on the freeway and my low end torque improved.

Well worth doing, and it's free :D

Yes, some care should be taken. Use a large screwdriver and be sure it is at the bottom of the tooth.

Ryan, thanks for pointing out the need for care

Update

I haven't been out on the freeway much this week but milage seems to be lower than before. I'm using the trip computer since I haven't filled up yet. The EGT's are definitely lower. They drop to about 220 in less than a minute after I come to a stop. Used to stay around 300-330. They are around 100 degrees lower while cruising on flat ground. I know the trip computer isn't accurate, but I figure it can be an indicator of how it's doing as every thing else is the same, including the fuel in the tank. Not sure about the power. Seems like it might have a little more at the bottom, but falls off sooner on the freeway. That's not exactly what the cummins needs in my opinion. It always had plenty of low end torque especially with 4. 10 gears. I'll leave it alone for awhile and see what the next tank shows.
