Has anyone had to tighten their tone wheel on the crankshaft? The '98. 5 I've been troubleshooting on (the SO's father's) has a damaged crank sensor and half of the tone wheel has come loose, causing the damage. Is there room to get to it by dropping the pan? The service manual calls for removing the transmission to remove the pan. The truck is a 4x4 with an auto. and 106,000 miles. Anyone been there, done that? Looking for advice.

No. Its between the 5th and 6th rods on the crankshaft. Oil pan has got to come off, or atleast off far enough to give access.
