Just ran across an 04 crew cab 6sp dually 4x4 with 270,000 miles on it. They have it priced at what I feel is a real good deal. What do you guys think? Is dropping 15-16K on a truck like this is a bad idea? If I were to seriously consider it what things should I inspect on the truck?

engine first

I would get an oil analysis if at all possible. That can tell you a lot about how well the truck was taken care of. That's where I'd start anyway FWIW

I don't think it's worth it. You can spend another $5k-$7k and get one with 100k on the clock. You could easily eat up $5000 with a new clutch, brakes, u-joints, ball joints, lift pump, CP3, injectors, water pump, shocks, driver's seat, a/c compressor, trans rebuild, power accessories, or any other items that can go wrong with such a mature truck.

On one hand, you might be getting a cared-for cream puff. On the other hand, it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

One thing you have to ask yourself-- Why are they getting rid of it at 270k? If they kept it that long, I would imagine they'd keep it longer if they thought it was a reliable rig. Something is compelling them to get rid of it.

04 with 270k... first thing that comes to mind is a cross country transporter/hauler... probably mostly highway miles. Would almost have to be to rack that many miles up in so short a time. '

Yep, and depending on the type of transport it could have been pretty hard miles. If it was used as a hot shot they can be pulling loads upwards of 25,000 lbs. The guys pulling RV's aren't so bad, but still that engine has been working a lot harder than the typical family truck. I like the Cummins engine, and I wouldn't be as worried about it as the rest of the truck!

Rebuild life is 350k miles, so you're only 80k from what Cummins expects the overhaul time to be. For 15-16k I agree with everyone else... too much money.

Plus also replacement of all those other non engine moving parts. "Run hard and put away wet"
