I pulled wed. and the truck ran fine no problems afterwards.

then i pulled on thurs. and when i got to the end of the track there was a puddle of oil on the track.

Found out it was the tappet cover that had blown the gasket. so i fixed that then now i noticed that not only did the tappet cover blow so did the timing cover gasket. looked a little more at the timing cover and the fan pully is touching the cover and the paint on the cover is cracked like its from excessive pressure

Now here is my thoughts.

1. Could it be that i need some breathers in the valve covers? because of the pressure at 4000 RPM's??

2. or maybe because i got the EGT's above 1600 too many times and i ruined my rings and im pushing 60PSI of boost into the pan????

3.

Either put breathers in the valve covers or put a 24 breather on the front(second) and forget about it. Heck even my fresh motor would blow the cover gasket with one breather.

Jim

I drilled and tapped my oil fil cap and put a filter on that. so that will do right?? instead of the 24valve breather.

and i thought about putting breathers in the covers but i also heard it makes a mess even with filters?

Michael

I would be interested to know if the breather in the oil fill cap worked. I get tons of blow by at high sustained speeds. Like 2 quarts in 40 miles at 90mph.

Ill let you know, i didnt get to check how much blow by im getting but we will see if it all helped

Michael

Does anyone have pictures of how they set up their filler cap as a breather?

Or, how does one set up a "24 Valve breather"...

I too burn large amounts or at least more oil when traveling at higher sustained speeds.

I got a breather filter from checker auto and grommet from the help section and put in place of the oil cap.

I have read because of the location of the draft tube on 12-valves higher RPM can throw a lot of oil out the tube. So maybe doing what kbbt did would help. I am thinking maybe Cummins moved the draft tube to the front in '99 in order to reduce oil loss because of the higher operating RPM of the 24v motor.

I know guys running twins and/or who run their trucks hard often do add another crankcase vent somewhere, generally in the valve covers.

A lot of 1600f runs will wear your rings down Highfinance, especially if not running synthetic oil. It could be your motor doesn't have quite as good of seal as it once did.

I hope not :{ but thats what i was thinking

I think thats what my prob is too, to high of egt for to long.

When you add the breather to the top, do you plug the lower?? wouldnt it still spew oil at high rpm if you dont???

On my engine I am able to run 4500+ RPM and already have the 24valve breather on it and was actually about to go out and buy some of the breathers for the valve covers. How many should I get and at what point would it be over kill? Is it safe to asume that most of this built up pressure would go thru the breather in the Timing Case cover just because its easier for the preasure to get out that way? Also, the one post above showed a pic of a 12valve oil filler with the breather on it... almost thinking that that would realive more presure than the 24valve style or what do you think?

One other thing... I was just looking at K&N's site... what is the best style to go with for the breathers? The clamp on style would require a short piece of pipe be welded to the cover and the grommet style requires drilling the cover out and puting in a grommet. They don't supply the grommets though.

What style do most go with?

I just pulled my front cover off and it is pushed out like to much pressure.

so im on my way to freightliner to go get my new cover and gasket :D

Ryan i am also thinking of putting filters on my valve covers.

but two things that i heard are, two on the front covers is enough, more than two is overkill

and also even though there filters they still make a mess out of the engine

and finally here is my fill cap filter :-laf

Yeah I am worried about the mess also. I also see that you have polished covers and the red engine (just like mine) so I am concerned about the mess it would make! How did you mount that breather? what is the billet piece? that is a really good idea and would like to do something like that!

Ok, another question. I thought maybe pulling the dipstick out a little would relieve some pressure. noooo!!! It just spews oil all over the frickin motor and everywhere. Is that somewhat expected??

highfinance97, where did you get that oil cap at?? Is it one of bob wagners billet caps that you drilled?

Ahhh, I'll have to run over to the local ricer shop and see If I can score one of them suckerz.

I'll just tell them im putting it on my hawnda crx with a 55shot of nawz and Blue L. E. D winshield washer sprayers. heck, they will probably give it to me for free then.
