I am trying to do my research for my a/t when it comes time. 90k and the lock up feels a little slugish compared to usual. I just talked to a local ATS installer and he told me with only a 60 h/p Edge EZ, that a heavy ATS t/c would kill the truck when put in gear. Is this common? I have not heard you guys talk about this. Thanks in advance. :)

c'mon, I'd like to see an answer to this as well. Why would the truk kill when put in gear since a t/c doesn't lock up in 1st? Can't believe is would kill it in any other gear once rolling so what do y'all know?

The first upgrade I did on my 95 was have a Goerend transmission with the triple tc installed. I drove the truck with stock power for a month or so till the engine got some attention. It certainly didn't stall the engine when I put it in gear, but when hooked to a heavy load, I wasn't sure it would move off the spot. Instead of cranking to 2200 rpm's like the stock converter, this one was pulling hard at 1200. It was like hitting a wall. Dave had set the transmission up for 275 hp, as I had requested, and my measly 130 to-the-ground just didn't cut it! Hp fixed all that. :D

You are starting with way more power than I had. As long as your transmission shift points, pressures, etc... are set up to match your hp output, where's the problem??

FWIW,

I 've got a good fluid coupling torque converter and with the power turned down- box off- it is acceptable. I don't understand the issue.

I am waiting to see some responses as well.

stalling w/aftermarket converter

I have the ATS converter and have never had the engine stall when put in gear.

Almost all the aftermarket converters improve the efficiency by making the converter "tighter", that is lower stall speed; so when you place the selector in drive the engine has more of a load on it than it would with a stock converter. With an absolutely stock engine, it is possible you could loose a little power right off the line, but you will make up for it in many other ways.

The only changes to my driving habits after the ATS converter is if I am stuck in traffic and not moving for a while (particularly in hot weather), I will pop the transmission into neutral.

Go for the transmission upgrade - you will have a 'new truck'.

KKeen -- maybe you want to call ATS direct to ask about this... they might have a different perspective or more light to shed on it than your local installer.

Y'all -- still like to hear some more of your thoughts.

No, the ATS Triplelok converter will not kill the truck when you put it in gear with just an Edge EZ or even stock.

Once you have the transmission to hold the power, usually the next step is people go with more.

Typically I run with the Box off around town, on injectors only.

No problems with stalling ever.

Have never heard of a problem on a stock 24 valve with stalling, computer makes up for it and adds a little more fuel to prevent stalling. On some stock 12 valve engines where things are still more mechanical I have heard of a few stalling but it is rare. The pure grunt of a diesel engine makes the difference.

I too, have the 60 HP Edge Card, as well as Stage IV ATS with TripleLoc. Have added more goodies later, but can't say it ever stalled at all, let alone when I had just the card and the transmission/converter. Think you've discovered how "wives tales get started". JMHO

Thanks for your input guys. Torn between an upgrade or complete swap rebuild. Guess I'll have to let someone get into it and tell me if it looks sound enough to save. I never pull more than a 7k pound boat, but a few more ponies would be nice. Thanks again for your input. :)

At 90K and pulling, most will advise to freshen up the entire transmission. If you do so it will ensure that you can add alot of HP and not have to worry about it. Just make sure you tell them what your intended purpose is for the truck.
