Can too much fuel conditioner cause pinging? I just tend to squirt a little in each time I get fuel instead of measuring it out like I know I should. I am getting what I beleive is a steady ping sound that I have not noticed before and I have not made any changes lately. I hear the sound at a light throttle and slow speed in fourth and fifth gear. I am using the power services conditioner from Wal Mart which I allways have used. I am running it at about 1/8" advance and max fuel setting with the stock fuel pin at max setting and the star wheel max down. I have had these settings for two years now. Any ideas?

Dude, this is funny.

I just pour a bottle in every time I fuel up. It's like four/five times stronger than it needs but then I'm happy doing it. Gives me that warm fuzzy pump feeling. She runs great, btw!!

I did fill a fuel filter with straight conditioner and the engine backfired through the turbo twice. Scary it be!

FWIW, I too use Power Services from Wally's Mart.

Scott

Sorry... ... I forgot to add that a "bottle" consists of pouring power service's into a smaller Stanadyne container. Not sure how much it holds though. I get three or four fill-ups from a standard size Power Services bottle (quart size)

Doesn't conditioner make your fuel soft and manageable? :-laf :-laf

Oh, never mind.

I don't measure either and I'm sure my fuel has been Overdosed at times and I've never heard it pinging above the normal diesel pinging.

I knew my hearing was bad but just how can you hear "pinging" above all the other noise these engines make? :-laf Pinging in a gasser is pre-ignition. How do you get that in a diesel? there is no fuel in the cylinder until the injector fires.

I always have told my wife to let me know if she hears anything "funny or different" because I can't.

I'm like Greenleaf, I get 4 doses per quart, running the same stuff.

Well I just came back from town with my truck and I have came to the conclusion that I may just be imagining things. I hear a noise that sounds like pinging but it may have always been there. It is kind of a pinging type noise but it does not get bad upon acceration like the gas motors and it seems to always be the same and even. I guess I am just looking for things that are not there. I guess I just can't believe that any motor can run as long and trouble free as these do and make enough noise to sound like they are going to fly apart. :-laf Thanks for the replies and I guess I will continue the same treatments I have in the past. Hope to make it to Indiana and maybe see some of you there. Oo.

Slow speeds in a high gear causes lugging. Strange noises can occure as it stresses the motor. Try to stay in a gear that keeps the rpms up above the chugging factor.

Oh yes I do keep the RPM up, I never lugg it as I know how hard it is on the transmission. I guess I wasn't clear as I am hearing this when I am at a light throttle slow cruise and it is a metallic rattle sound but like I said it was probably always there and I just noticed it.

rlyons,

My '01 did the same thing with the same additive. The sound of the engine changed very slightly so I quit using the additive. It took two or three tanks of using additive at the prescribed rate before I noticed the very subtle change in engine tone. It took about 20 gallons of non additive fuel added to the tank to normalize the engine sounds.

Grab a piece of wooden dowl or some garden hose and put it on the center/bottom of the injection pump, fender side and listen there for something... .

I've heard one or two that made a bit of unusual noise and it was a broken or failing return spring for the roller ring/cam assembly.....

pb... .

Glad nothing's wrong.

My 2nd gen always made the same noises. But this 3rd gen with the pilot injection and common rail injection makes all sorts of crazy noises. Rattles come, rattles go, ticking, not ticking. I called cummins and they said that the computer can only adjust the fuel timing and duration only so fast so it's going to make crazy noises for a second when you stomp on the accelerator, etc... . Honestly -- I prefer the louder but more consistent 2nd gen noises.
