Ok guys, Truck is running great ! New pump/injectors. Pump is set at 20 % Just how much smoke is too much? In every gear I get a nice steady stream of black trailing smoke. I hooked up to the trailer yesterday, seemed to be alittle slow/sluggish in 3rd gear. The guy who set up the pump is out sick till Friday :<( And I guess I'll have to wait till he can see what I'm talkin bout. Is it possible that I may still have to crank up the fuel for the 3rd gear problem? EGT is up just a bit But will not know till i get a big load on it. It did CURE the white smoke/ruff running at early morning start up. THAT was worth the $$$$. TIA, Mike

Hey Dave/Mike.

When I bought my POWER WAGON injectors he told me the pump might have to go back to stock fuel rate or maybe a bit lower. When I first fired it up I had the fuel rate (diaphragm) at max and smoke there was!! But the power was FANTASTIC. I immediately turned the diaphragm back down to half way between stock and max and lost some power and cut the smoke back to an "acceptable to me" level.
Also, I totally backed out the AFC smoke limiter screw so that snap idle and run up to the governor under no load is as clean as it can be. The new injectors eliminate the need for this setting to be anything else.

I blow about the same density for the same time as most of the big rigs I see.

It's funny-when I first bought the truck I was really concerned about any smoke at all, like smoke meant time for a new engine or something. My experience with my truck is the more smoke the more power.

Now and then you see posts that say diesels need to smoke to make good power and personal observation confirms this.

An example: There was a train wreck in Fullerton, CA at the BASTA siding where a freight and Amtrack tangled. The railroad, Union Pacific, had two huge Caterpillar loaders of the same model to clear the debris. One blew substantially darker smoke than the other and it was definitely the better performer.

So it probably depends mostly on your smoke tolerance or addiction as to where your pump will find itself adjusted.

I like the smoke! I just "fine tuned" my pump yesterday and I got lots of smoke--I'm ready to race a Powerlesstroke! Keep the smoke! Dont try to make it easier on all those misquitos that tailgate you. I love to cover someone brand new white car with a light coat of black sout! Of course I'm just a young punk though. lol #ad

This was an old post. I just kept running it that way. since I got the 215 being installed I did not really worry bout it too much. Should be getting the truck back by next weekend. Thanks for the replys, Mike
